If everyone is interested in doing another group read, toss out suggestions here. Self-promotion is allowed, of course, but maybe add a few other suggestions as well.

I've been wanting to read Six-Gun Tarot so I'd be down for that. Anyone else have any suggestions?

message 4: by Quentin (new)

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 231 comments How about Dead in the West by Lansdale? That's a bit shorter which may mean more people would participate. I haven't read it but plan to soon. Just a thought.

Only thing with that one is whether or not everyone can get it/has it already. Though there seem to be plenty of copies for sale on the market on Amazon.

John | 142 comments Dead in the West is required reading for any Weird West fan, imho. Not only for the creepy factor, but Lansdale's literary craft is amazing to behold.

I agree. It's an important read for the genre. We still need some more suggestions though.

message 8: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 345 comments I'll throw Whiskey and Wheelguns out there. Its short and I know it's on your to-reads list Ashe lol.

message 9: by James (new)

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) | 70 comments I've just joined a few groups on GoodReads and I'm starting to participate in them. In the Time Travel group, they (we) are reading a large anthology called The Time Traveler's Almanac. It has stories that span the history of time travel fiction. One story a week.

I'm not sure if there is a good anthology, for this group, or not. I'm relatively new to Weird Western literature.

Just putting that out there.

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) | 70 comments A very quick search turned up Dead Man's Hand as a similar book.

Or has the group already read that one?

This will actually be our second group read. We started with a short story. So, we'll add that to the list. I have a copy already and it does work pretty well as an intro to the genre.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm up for The Six-Gun Tarot as I got a copy over the holidays, but I'm going to give two suggestions: one for Hawthorne: Tales of a Weirder West as it's four short stories in one book, and the second, and this one is kind of out there but might be a fun read for us is El Sombra. Check the second one out and see what y'all think.

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) | 604 comments Mod
El Sombra doesn't really hit me but I'm just the humble facilitator here. So far, we have:

The Six-Gun Tarot
The Strange Adventures of Rangergirl
Dead in the West
Dead Man's Hand
Whiskey & Wheelguns: Foreshadows: A Collection of Tall Tales from the Weird West
Hawthorne: Tales of a Weirder West
El Sombra

If anyone wants to add a couple more, go for it. Maybe just one or two more, and then I'll put 'em up for vote.

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) | 70 comments I'm keeping my fingers crossed, for Dead Man's Hand, if only because I already have a copy, but haven't gotten around to reading it.

message 15: by Gwyn (new)

Gwyn | 35 comments I'd be down with Dead Man's Hand (I got a copy for Christmas too ;) ). Six-Gun Tarot is a good read, though I have read it previously. I was thinking about picking up a hard copy though, so that would be a good excuse. ;) I have Dead In The West on my to read shelf, but honestly zombies aren't my first choice. Really I'd be down with any of those options, though I'm leaning towards Dead Man's Hand

If there's no more suggestions by Saturday, i'll post the poll on Sunday.

message 17: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 345 comments Nope, that list looks pretty good to me. I see page count isn't short this time though aside from my suggestion of Whiskey & Wheelguns. It's cool though, I probably should get into a hefty length sized Western book. I already know which ones I'm voting for.

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) | 604 comments Mod
Yeah i figure we got a solid list now. But I'll let the week finish.

message 19: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I'm new but if it's ok to make a suggestion I'd like to suggest Wanted: Dead or Undead. It might be an odd mix of zombies and western but it was actually a very enjoyable read in my opinion.

message 20: by Gwyn (new)

Gwyn | 35 comments On this group zombies and western is a perfectly normal mix ;)

message 21: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Haha sounds good then!

message 22: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) | 604 comments Mod
I will add that one for the next group read. Actually, might make the next one a zombie-themed set.

message 23: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer okies ^.^

Currently, The Six-Gun Tarot is in the lead.

message 25: by Laura (new)

Laura (dogsmomlaura) I like several of the suggestions, but for me cost is a factor. For that reason, Wanted: Dead or Undead is appealing, simply because it is free.

message 26: by Laura (new)

Laura (dogsmomlaura) Along those same lines, looking at the group bookshelf, Unicorn Western is also free.

message 27: by Ashe (new)

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) | 604 comments Mod
That's understandable. That's partly why I voted for Dead Man's Hand.

message 28: by Jim (new)

Jim | 33 comments I'd suggest my friend Kevin Summers's WW, The Man Who Shot John Wilkes Booth.

The poll ends tomorrow but that book can go on a future suggestion poll. The March poll is probably going to be zombie-themed.

message 30: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 345 comments Well it looks like it's gonna be Six Gun Tarot and I think I'm gonna sit this one out. I can barely dedicate time for a short read nevermind one as long as this one.

message 31: by Eric (new)

Eric Bahle (ericbahle) | 45 comments I can barely dedicate time for a short read nevermind one as long as this one.

There are worse problems to have though, eh? My cue is also pretty full, but I've wanted to read this one for a while now so I'm gonna try and get in on this.

Ashe Armstrong (ashearmstrong) | 604 comments Mod
Since the poll ends today, I'm gonna go ahead and lock this thread and set up the discussion thread. Unless a bunch of new members show up to join, I don't think the poll's gonna move anymore.
