Ami made a wonderful suggestion of reading this book using the timeline of its original serialization. Unfortunately, that would give us a six week timeframe for a book with just over 200 pages. Instead, I've developed a four week schedule, which puts us just over into February. I've given us a rather quick start date. However, I've made the first week's reading relatively short in order to provide the ability to easily catch up if you have not obtained your book.

Week of January 12 - Part 1 - Chapters I thru IV
Week of January 19 - Part 2 - Chapters V thru XII
Week of January 26 - Part 3 - Chapters XIII thru XV and Part 4 - Chapters XVI thru XVIII
Week of February 2 - Part 4 - Chapters XVIII to conclusion

Madge UK (madgeuk) | 2933 comments Thanks a lot Deborah. It should be a fun read and will be an extension of the Xmas tradition of telling ghost stories around the Yule logs - Oooooh!

For some reason, a ghost story has real appeal.

Madge UK (madgeuk) | 2933 comments I should have added that at our family Xmas party my daughter told us a story about Baskerville Hall Hotel where she stayed in the summer and where she woke up in the night to feel someone sitting on the end of her bed. Thinking it was her daughter, she switched on the light only to find no-one there! In the morning she found out that the bedroom was supposedly haunted and that Sherlock Holmes was inspired to write The Hound of the Baskervilles there!! She tells a good story and had us all enthralled:)

BTW my daughter knew nothing about the hotel and had not read THotB:

Pip | 467 comments Great story Madge! I wonder.... Had she been over-indulging with the free tea and coffee making facilities?!

Just a quick note. I will be flying all day tomorrow so my responses will be somewhat limited. I will stay in touch the best I can while in Idaho. I'm very much looking forward to our discussions.

In regards to the reading schedule, is the first week a discussion period having already read the chapters prior, or is it a reading and discussing combination from the 12th through the 19th?

Ami, Some choose to read prior to the discussion date, some read along the way. Either way I have found it helpful to make notes. It makes it easier for me to comment.

Stormie, don't worry. I deliberately made this week's reading shorter in case people didn't have their books. You shouldn't have a problem keeping up.

Stormie, you can get free PDF's all over the internet for this piece...In case you wanted to start while waiting for your actual hard copy. :)

Renee M | 802 comments Started today and am finding this to be a VERY quick read. I'll be taking notes so I can participate in discussion, because I'll probably be done before I finish this post.
(Okay. Maybe not that soon.)

Stormie, it's a fairly easy read. You'll be able to catch up quickly.

Madge UK (madgeuk) | 2933 comments I found myself imagining it as a stage play, a Victorian melodrama. Collns put on plays with Dickens so perhaps he had that in mind.
