Try to create a bestselling YA novel with zero planning! Well maybe some planning like... Planning your character.

Arthur 'Art' Szell is a homophobic gay teen who's loves dancing. He's been preparing to win the prestigious National Dance Championship for years but he has terrible accident and breaks his hand. The championship is in 4 months.
Edward Nostrum is the captain of the school debate team and a state champion in Model UN. But when the school cuts funding for the activities he loves in order to support the dance team, this hardcore conservative decides to sabotage the team from the inside...luckily that one kid broke his hand, so now there is a spot open for his masterplan.
Art is heart-broken that his spot on the team is being given to some Edward No-body-strum! But he has a evil masterplan. His hand is non-functional only for 3 months. He just needs to make sure that Edward learns to dance well enough to keep his spot secure for him. and bad enough that after 3 months he can reclame his spot and kick Edward out of the team and out of his life. muahAHAHAHAHA!!!
Felicity Wilde has been on the dance team for a long time and has a fierce rivalry with Arthur. Now that he's off the dance team, she's going to do everything in her power to make sure it stays that way - which means making sure that Edward keeps his spot permanently.
Arthur didn't always hate Felicity. It used to be dislike some time back, and it used friendship some more time back. A long time ago Felicity and Arthur were BFF (scratch that last F). But as always, an ill-advised venture into romantic territory, from their safe platonic friendship, changed everything. For worse. Now, Arthur can't forget, and forgive, all that stuff Felicity implied about him. Just because he's not into her, doesn't mean he's not into girls. And it definitely doesn't mean he's into boys! Yuck!
Being bisexual herself, Felicity hadn't seen anything wrong with the words coming out of her mouth on that day. Just asking "Are you gay?" didn't seem like it would cause the huge argument that it did. She had been expecting Arthur to either say "No" and leave it at that, or some sort of "Yes/Maybe/I don't know", but then, of course, it turned into a pretty big fight about homophobia and the LGBTQ+ community. Felicity isn't planning on apologizing any time soon, or at least not until he does first.
Scribbles! wrote: "Being bisexual herself, Felicity hadn't seen anything wrong with the words coming out of her mouth on that day. Felicity was basically a pro so maybe she wasn't terrified. But the inexperienced Art could feel his anxiety growing. Embarrassingly, it's the only thing that grew that night.
Art doesn't know the proper protocol when your boyfriend fails to perform, but accusing him of being gay is definitely not it!
HRH Cordelia Crilartar is the smarter than the smartest. She's the most beautiful, with general populace eons behind her. Her shiny white fur can make pearls cry. But sadly the human girl called Felicity insists on calling her 'Sassy'. The foolish mortal doesn't understand she is the epitome of feline grace and dignity, not a squishy-cuddly 'cat'.
