message 1: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (last edited Jul 06, 2020 05:32AM) (new)

Sometimes when I read (or reread) the first book of a series it sucks me in so deep that I have to read at least the next two books. This of course depends greatly on personal taste, how much the characters resonate with me, and often what mood I’m in too.

Does this happen to you? If so, what books did it?

Here are two of mine:
Quarter Share (Golden Age of the Solar Clipper, #1) by Nathan Lowell Quarter Share by Nathan Lowell

The Long Way Home (Sequoyah, #1) by Sabrina Chase The Long Way Home by Sabrina Chase

Laz the Sailor (laz7) | 220 comments I don't tend to re-read much, as TBR Mountain is still growing, but here are some of my favorite series:

The Pride of Chanur (Chanur #1) by C.J. Cherryh

A Princess of Mars (Barsoom, #1) by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Trading in Danger (Vatta's War, #1) by Elizabeth Moon or Hunting Party (The Serrano Legacy, #1) by Elizabeth Moon

Totally agree on Trading in Danger!

Trike | 782 comments Jack L. Chalker’s Well World saga. I start either the first or second book and I have to physically stop myself from continuing.

Same with Sten by Cole and Bunch. It’s page one and then it’s eight books later.

Definitely Quarter Share.

Also, On Basilisk Station.

Some in other genres, too. Like Naked in Death and Arrows of the Queen.

William | 5 comments I recently reread Quarter Share, then stopped only after Double Share.

The first trilogy is so different from the second. I barely recognize Ish, nor the spacer culture.

Each of the series's sees Ish (or other protaognists) finding a new part of spacer culture, and the characters and setting are barely recognizable.

I enjoy them. First time through, I was expecting a similar tone and was very surprised at the difference.

Laz the Sailor (laz7) | 220 comments @Betsy - have you tried Longknife vs HH? Defiant

@William - I agree the characters changed, but I felt they evolved naturally.

It looks like there’s enough interest in this, so I’m making it the theme for August’s Themed Pick.

Sounds good because this is something that happens to me several times each year.

OK, but can we exclude Quarter Share as we've read it recently.

If you read the Themed Pick nomination post there’s line saying we can’t pick books we have read in the past two years.

Right - real ALL the words...

As long as I’m moderator, we won’t ever allow nominations of books we have read in the previous two years. Most nomination threads exclude all books we have read previously - but the group has been here long enough now that I figure we sometimes need allow repeats.

Lizzie | 303 comments My Binge rereads are Pern novels. F.M. Busby's Rissa Series, Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War, The original Dune trilogy, the Foundation Trilogy and the Star Trek novels by Greg Cox - The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh in 2 volumes followed by To Reign in Hell.

And then I got a Kindle, and my eyesight got worse. So I have stacks on the bookshelf and hundreds in the kindle to read the first time, so I haven't reread anything in a while.

I’m not familiar with any “free trading” series by Elizabeth Moon. What’s the first book of it?

My eyes went bad before I got my kindle. It was soooooo nice to be able to read again without my eyes complaining. Love being able to adjust the font size, etc.

My bad. It's actually called Vatta's War.

Totally agree about Trading in Danger (first book in Vatta’s War). I reread it about every three years and almost always end up binging the entire series. Vatta’s Peace doesn’t do the same though.

Ally | 99 comments I never reread, there are too many books to read !

Once I'm hooked on a series I have to read all of it. That's why I try to choose series that are finished because I am really frustated to WAIT for the next one !

Probably shouldn’t start David Gerrold’s War for the Chtorr series. It’s been 27 years since the last installment, with no timeframe for the next. He makes George R.R. Martin look like a speed writer by comparison.
