The Walking Dead, Vol. 1 question

I put The Walking Dead as the name of the book because it is similar. I really loved this book series but i forgot what it was called. I know that it followed a girl in the first one and it continued with her friend in the second book. I believe that there were 3 books in all. I remember it was like a zombie apocalypse book. I vaguely remember there being a type of enemy with red glowing eyes. Most of the book takes place underground because most of society hid to get away from the monsters above ground. Towards the end i think the main characters end up on the surface.
