Just out of curiosity, Scott, what are your rates? I've been keeping my eye out for a future editor for the next Grimluk book (cause then I can factor that into the kickstarter goal).

For novel length works (between 65K and 100K words), the rates start at about $600 USD and go up to $1000 USD -- this is for copy editing, and some light (very light) content editing. For works over 100K words, it's negotiable.

Besides having written four books, I also spent a year working as an acquisitions editor for a small literary agency, which also included getting some of the more promising submissions hammered into shape.

I have been a professional copy editor since 1987. I am occasionally available to do freelance copy edits, including critiques and comments if desired. I am interested in all sorts of genre fiction, and in non-fiction so long as it is not about religion. I have to fit these in with my own writing projects, etc., so I can't take on all comers, but maybe we can work something out.

I worked with Scott on my soon-to-be-released book, Five Bloody Heads, and am confident that as a result I am putting out a much stronger product. He did a great job identifying patterns of writing that were making my work weaker.

I am currently editing for several satisfied customers as well as writing my own fiction. Call me a glutton, but I enjoy the editing process.

I aim to provide an affordable and quality service. I am currently working my way into full-time self-employment in my home office and so have a flexible schedule to take on new authors. I know the sword and sorcery genre tend to encourage long word counts, and I am open to allowing for partial payments via PayPal invoicing to break up the cost of hiring an editor for a long novel.

My current rate is from $0.003 to $0.004 per word (depending on the extent of editing required), which adds up to $30-$40 per 10,000 words. This rate will only hold until my schedule fills. I provide a free sample of 2,000 words to make sure that we will be a good fit and to evaluate the level of editing which will be necessary.

I have edited everything from 180,000 word epic fantasy to 3,000 word erotic short stories and personally read anything from Jane Austin to Aleron Kong. All genres and tropes are welcome.

I haven't posted here before because I've tended to see editing as a sideline to authorship, and I've let the work come to me rather than go look for it.

But I wouldn't mind doing more.

I'm an award-winning author of science fiction, science-fantasy, fantasy, and crime fiction, with 23 novels traditionally published and 90 short fiction works sold to pro markets. I've won the Arthur Ellis Award (the "Canadian Edgar"), and been shortlisted for the Nebula, Aurora, PK Dick, Van Vogt, Endeavour (twice), and Derringer Awards.

I've edited a dozen books, one of which went on to win the Aurealis Ward for best Australian SF novel of its year. My rates for developmental editing and line editing tend to be four to five cents a word.
