{In beat-up shape the oldest were fourteen when it all went down. Ninth grade. They try to teach the younger kids with left over school books, but no one really wants to show up.}

September laid in Luke's arms as the ran up.
Luke found the school and burst open the doors with his good leg. "You'll be safe. I promise." he said to her quietly.
She coughed loudly. "Everything I've ever had."
"I'm so sorry." He said shutting his eyes. He looked around for the people that used to be here but he didn't see anyone. Luke walked to the nurses office.
"My treehouse," she mumbled. "I don't care about anything, but my brothers' journals and Tuesday's stuff...the treehouse..."
"I'm sorry. Maybe they're okay. I'll look once you're okay." He lied her down on the patient bed. He opened the cabinet and found some rags. He let it soak under the sinks water. Luke squeezed out the extra water. He walked over to her and started wiping her arms gently.
She wanted to fight, but was too weak and pitiful. "I'm sorry," she whispered.
"It's not your fault. I'm sorry. I'm so stupid." Luke shut his eyes hard. "I'm an idiot." Luke shook his head and went back to caring for her. He wiped ash off her cheek.
She bit her lip. "You're not. I get the frustration. Forgetting they aren't there."
He looked into her eyes. He bit the inside of his cheek roughly. "It's not fair. Why did I have to stay? She should have made it, not me." Luke clenched his fist and droplets from the rag landed on the bed.
"I think that all the time. Lucas had cancer anyway, a tumor in his lungs. Tuesday was hit by a car right after the disease started, and everyone else died of the disease and left me here. They should have made it. They were braver and stronger and smarter."
He noticed that his name was close to her brothers. That sort of explained why she had asked him if his name was actually Lucas. "She ....had cystic fibrosis.. You can live with it and everything but every day was so hard for her." Luke choked a bit. "Sorry." he mumbled. He took the rag and cleaned her hand.
She gently took his hand. "I'm sorry, too," she said.
He looked at her as tears filled his eyes. He closed them tightly to make them disappear. Luke held her hand and looked at her. gosh...she's beautiful
She sighed. "Is my hair singed?"
He laughed lightly. "No it's as beautiful as ever." He moved a piece from her face.
She blushed. "Good. It's one of my greatest attributes."
He saw her cheeks flush and felt her head to make sure she didn't have a temperature. "Are you feeling alright?" he noticed they were still holding hands and he softly smiled.
She smiled. "Nothing. You just...thanks."
"Oh, you're welcome." he smiled and blushed lightly. He rubbed her hand with his thumb. "I kind of owed it to you anyway. I'm really sorry."
"I...I don't know what to do..." she whispered.
He rubbed her arm. "It'll be alright. Can you stand? We can try to find things that made it."
"I could stand the entire time, I just didn't mind you carrying me," she replied, sitting up and swinging her legs of the bed.
Luke watched her and scoffed. As she moved he laughed. "You're...wow.." he laughed and opened the door. "after you miss."
She smiled and walked through, hitting the second set of doors she didn't know were there. "Ow."
He closed his eyes and shook his head. "Sorry, I just imagined you knew." he opened those as well. "You okay?"
"I was homeschooled," she laughed. "I'm fine."
"Oh. Okay." he followed her. Her laugh is so cute. Luke took her hand gently. "Just in case...."
She smiled, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "Of course."
He grinned and he blushed lightly. They left the school and headed back to her house.
