Hope Mirrlees was probably best known in her day for her poetry, though today she is associated primarily with her curiously skewed fantasy novel, Lud-in-the-Mist, unearthed in 1970. Her first novel, Madeleine: One of Love's Jansenists (set in the literary salons of 17th century France) was published in 1919 and may be out of print. Her second novel, The Counterplot, was published in 1924, and while it has a contemporary setting, it incorporates a 14th century Spanish sacramental play. Mirrlees clearly had eclectic interests and if her slyly subversive fantasy novel is any indication, her other works should be worth a read.

I just want to stress that the literary salon referred to here specifically is that of the BURIED novelist Madeleine de Scudéry who wrote HUGE novels no one reads today.
