This one will be easy for me - we're hosting two Korean exchange students for three weeks this month. We plan to take them to a Korean restaurant about half-way through their stay as a special treat (and a break from all the weird American food they will eat the rest of the time). We plan to go to Korean bbq - it was really appreciated by the exchange students we hosted last year from the same program. http://www.tojikoreangrillhouse.com/Also - I've been really interested in making Bibimbap at home. Would love if someone had a good recipe?
Alice, I don't have a recipe for Bibimbap, but I wanted to suggest that you look on http://www.allrecipes.com/ . They usually have a pretty good selection of recipes for every dish. If that fails, try googling it.I foresee a Korean/Japanese pot luck in the near future with my friends.

I hadn't tried the allrecipes website before - they are great! I love the how to videos! Thanks for the tip.
Ruth, Allrecipes is my favorite recipe website. I can always find something on it. I'm glad you were able to find some recipes.
I used Urbanspoon also to find restaurants in my town to visit. I think we will hit a couple and then have a potluck to top off the end of the month.
We have a couple of Japanese restaurants here. Unfortunately, we don't have any Korean ones. My friends and I love going to Osaka. They go for the sushi and I go for everything else. I've tried the beef and chicken teriyaki, sukiyaki, yakiniku, chicken katsu, yakisoba, and sunomono soup. My favorites are the sunomono soup and beef teriyaki. We made one excrusion to Mt. Fuji, the other Japanese place. There I had the negiyaki. It was pretty good. I've also tried sake several times. My experience has been that it's either really good or really bad. I don't know enough about it to know how to order the good sake every time. I may get a bottle or two of it and see if I can learn a thing or two.
Went to K-Fusion with a few friends for lunch today and got to try some new things.Kimchi! I was excited to try it, but I think it may be one of those tastes that one must become accustomed to. They had a cucumber and a cabbage kimchi. I don't tolerate spicy foods very well so they were a bit hot for me. The cucumber was nice and juicy. The pickled veg without chili were my favorite though - lightly sweet.
Pajeon - the patty was delicious, but I wasn't so sure about the fish flake topping! The pancake was served on a hot stone platter. The heat from the platter made the fish flakes move like they were still alive! Thrilling to see.
Beef cheese balls = obviously yummy!
Glass noodles made from sweet potatoes -to die for if you love noodles like me.
Hot stone Galbi (short ribs), spicy pork and chicken. These were all tasty. I noticed a trend of sweetness with an afterburn.
I would go to K-Fusion again - their lunch boxes are great you get to sample several different staples for a low price. It's a small place, but very busy.
Metal chopsticks were a challenge though - I'm out of practice.
Yesterday I made beef kushiyaki for dinner. It was surprisingly easy and turned out really well. The beef was sweet and savory. I'm adding it to my collection of recipes.
Allrecipes. I think I was actually looking for Korean recipes on there when I found it. The recipe calles for mirin (Japanese sweet wine) and I've decided that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I'm looking forward to using it in other recipes.
We had our Korean BBQ tonight - yum!! I loved especially the bibimbap (or course) and radish kimchi. My family had lots of great bulgogi (both beef and pork) and chicken (I'm vegetarian, so I didn't have that :-) ).
Hmm - I am going to have to try that bibimap! Also I have been surprised learning all the different veggies that are used in kimchi.Tim and I went to the Tepanyaki Japanese steakhouse. It was a little more pricey than our usual stops - but we loved it!
Ambiance - the exterior looks straight out of the 1970s which is I think why we never were drawn to the place, although it's walking distance from our house. When you go inside it's like a wonderland with no spot of wall undecorated. There is a fountain, murals all over the walls.
Service - Our waitress did not smile and didn't speak English well, but we didn't mind. The chef cooked the food in front of us and was a master of his tools spinning eggs and tossing and throwing the food and implements in the air, starting things on fire and throwing food into Tim's mouth. So fun to watch!
Food - the food was delicious - it was all tender, juicy and just cooked enough. We loved everything off the grill, my fav were the shrimp and veggies. I wouldn't recommend salad, it looks like bagged but it did have a strange sort of spicy mayo drsg on it.
Can't wait until family comes to visit so that we can share it with them!
I wondered if they had this kind of restaurant in Japan and found the answer here #24. http://www.japan-talk.com/jt/new/japa...
It seems that cooking your own food at the table is a more common feature of Japanese restaurants.
The more I learn about Japan, the more I'd like to visit.

Search your local area for restaurants that serve these foods and invite your friends for a tasting!
Find recipes and invite your friend for a potluck at your house in which everyone attempts to make a typical dish from Japan or Korea. I have had a few of these and they are a lot of fun.
