Jayne Downes | 19 comments I have just read this book by the author of "Wonder"; R J Palacio. A beautifully illustrated graphic novel set in France about a Jewish girl who was hidden from the Nazis by a schoolboy and his family. Julian the boy was crippled by polio and was treated badly because of his disability and father's work in the sewers. The message of the story is that people should not be bystanders and allow evil things like the Holocaust and cruel treatment of others to occur; the USA's recent treatment of refugees is seen as a modern day evil in the book. Great for Intermediate and older.

Jane (janeboniface) | 123 comments I recently purchased and read"White Bird" also Jayne, and I found it very moving. I love graphic novels like this, with real depth and meaning, as I think they will reach a wider (or different) audience than the traditional chapter book. I too would recommend White Bird for any Intermediate school library (or Year 6 and up really).
