I'll open this up with a bit of honesty, I had cooled significantly in my love for Colfer and his work before I placed my hold on this book. Then Lord Highfire comes along and sets my love for Colfer's voice and pacing on fire. 'Vern, as he's affectionately known, is the last of dragonkind, hiding out in the remote recesses of the southern Louisiana bayous, living out the rest of his existence on a lay-z-boy. Vern is content to keep himself encapsulated in a depressive state of inebriation and bitter nostalgia, up until he is stumbled upon by a local teen named Everett Moreau. See, "Squib," Everett's nickname he earned blowing a few toes off with dynamite (accidentally), needs a bit of saving from local Constable Regence Hook, a crooked psychopath cop who needs Moreau to disappear after the boy discovers Hook's drug running operation. Cue fantasy / sci-fi dragon hi-jinks. Highfire is a riot of a book, with plenty of action, wisecracking, and snappy dialogue to keep you entertained from cover to cover. I highly recommend this title to any fan of fantasy or sci-fi, regardless of your familiarity with Colfer's other works.
I was surprised by how well Eoin Colfer translated themselves from Youth to Adult fiction so seamlessly, and this title got me excited to see what else he'll be putting out in the future.
What are some authors that have surprised you, either by switching gears, or branching into alternative genres? Was it a pleasant surprise, or did it leave you missing their old work? Tell me below!
