Amy | 12988 comments This is one of those books I would not have picked up, unless it fit a challenge, and in fact if fit three. Decades Bingo 1980, Southern, and Appalachia all rolled into one. What did I think of it? I thought the ending was unsettling and unsatisfying, and I have to say I felt that way throughout the book. Young people have loved this book as a beloved classic. For me reading it for the first time, I feel like other books may have been a better fit.

One thing to note, the title is misleading. It leads the reader to believe that someone has deeply loved someone named Jacob. However, one soon starts to understand that this is actually a biblical reference to Jacob and Esau and about being the unfavored twin. The one of the earth.

Tracy (tstan) | 1261 comments I loved this as a preteen, but suspect it might not hold up now. Like so many of my childhood favorites, sigh...
