Very well written moving and compelling tough read. Its hard to "enjoy" books like these, but I am glad I read it.

I came in on a 4 for this too, but need to write my review. Pretty heartbreaking, but also (view spoiler)

I don't know much about the story, but for some reason I thought it was a romance. I was wondering if there was any similarity between this book and An American Marriage (which I just read).
I actually rated this 4.5 stars, dinging it for obscureness in the Zion section. Actually went back and looked at my review...a tough uncomfortable but compelling read. Written in the 70s, it is tragic how little has changed.

NancyJ - I described it in my review as Baldwin using a Romeo & Juliet type story to shed a sering light on racism in the justice system.
It is definitely a romance and the familial love is also a sweet aspect of the story, but they have tough times as a Black couple in New York during the 70s.
What I love about James Baldwin is that he writes difficult and heart wrenching so well. None of his books are easy reads, but they’re so eloquent and compelling that you can’t put them down.
