For this challenge there are 4 categories. You can choose to complete a few of the categories, or all of them. Each category is worth 5 points when completed. You will not get any points if the category is not completed. You can earn up to 20 points for this challenge. Please do not use books that you have used in other challenges for this group. Books must have been read on or after 1/1/2015.

Witches/Magic

**There's a difference between a potion/charm and magic for this challenge. Think of a potion/charm as something that has to be made, mixed, cooked, using chemistry.... Magic is something that someone can do without any prep time.
**For Myths/Mythical you're looking for a book that is either based on a myth structure from that area, or includes a mythical creature, deity, etc.

If you haven't read the Sabina Kane books she has a familiar that turns into a cat.

I always suck at A to Z challenges I should work on it first. But since it's a full year challenge I'm putting it on the back burnder.

Good idea with the Kane books! I was thinking of going with The Witches of Echo Park (The Witches of Echo Park #1) by Amber Benson because it will help with another challenge in a different group. I was trying to figure out if there is a familiar.

But I think I can fit a Kane book in for another challenge too!

Sorry for the ramble!

I knew this one would be hard not being able to share. That's why I made A to Z easier this year. That way you can take care of this one first and then try to fill in the A to Z with things that don't fit here.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Huh, burnder . . . I should make that into a real world.

Yeah, Heather I finally noticed the A to Z is much easier. Bless you, I might actually finish one!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Heather, question! Endless Knight (The Arcana Chronicles, #2) by Kresley Cole does have mythology, greek. As it references the Arcana characters to greek gods. It's never officially stated that that's what is behind the whole mythology. Does it still count?

If not I'll use it for another challenge. If I'm doing this challenge I want to do it right!

message 18: by Heather (last edited Jan 17, 2015 04:07PM) (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
I haven't read it 100%. Just use your best judgement. I think the intent was that there were either Greek mythological characters, or their myth structure comes into play. If their myths are influencing the book then I'd say that could work.

Also, I'm making that category Greece/Rome. The Roman stories are mostly based on the Greek one's, but if you get it from a Roman perspective you can still use it.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Well I'll go with yes, because all they've been referring to is Greek gods/goddesses and referencing the Greek history behind the symbolism of the deck.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Crap I just realized the other mythology one is Egyptian. Wish I could have used Gunmetal Magic!

Any suggestions for Egyptian mythology?

You can always re-read Gunmetal Magic.

Ones that came to mind for me for Egypt are the Dark Days series from Jocelynn Drake, not all of the books, but one or two. Then there are a couple in the Dark Hunter series that would work, just can't remember which ones.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments OK! That points me in the right direction. Dark Days books are ones I need to go back and check out.

Antigoddess had Egypt. Anything with the book of the dead could work. I have some historical fiction that would count if you want something in that direction. I think some from Kat and Bones could work. That vamp is Egyptian.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Thanks Heather!

Antigoddess is one I bought a while ago. Though I could use a push to re-read Kat and Bones 1 (but I don't think there's Egyptian myth in that one . . .) and push on to finish the rest of the series.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Hmmmm, I may find out. Though I think Magic Rises actually might have some Egyptian mythology in it. Her father . . . it hasn't quite crossed the line yet.

Wait! Wait!! Ah, I totally forgot about the familiars in Endless Knight! And one category down!

And the Shera rejoiced!

I just wanted to make sure everyone knew this was okay... Someone used Lamassu. They're technically Assyrian and not Egyptian. Plus, I think most of them were located around Mesopotamia. However, the Assyrians did control Egypt for a while. I'm okay with people using anything from actual Egyptian deities/myths to those of a conquering people. However, please do not use something that involves Greek or Roman deities since it's its own category. Unless you happen to find something where Egyptian stories are clashing/meeting up with the Greco-Roman myths. That might open a few more stories up for people.

message 34: by Shera (Book Whispers) (last edited Feb 01, 2015 10:24PM) (new)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments That was me. I had remembered reading about Lamassu/lots-of-other-alt names in Egyptian mythology and whether Assyrian influence was the cause for Egypt's use of half animal half man legends and depictions. (That's the only reason I even had any idea what they were.) That's probably why when I hear Lamassu I think Egypt. My bad!

Bumped to Greek! And I'll keep that in mind for the challenge!

Shera, I was saying you could use them Egypt if you wanted. Sorry if it didn't read that way. I was trying to say it was okay since they conquered Egypt at some point and the Greeks and Romans never actually used them. I was just trying to say not to use Zeus and the crew if one of them happened to end up in Egypt. Any civilization besides Greece and Rome that conquered Egypt could be used as Egypt. Does that make sense?

I would count him. He's not your typical familiar, but you could make a good argument for him.

For Vampires have you read Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop ? That series is good and there are 3 books out.
