I wrote in the part 2 chat that I wanted to know more about the father and I thought the beginning of this part answered that for me...but then just remained vague until the end. I guess we can safely assume that Maud's mother got pregnant out of wedlock, but then the aunt seemed to suggest they didn't elope? I definitely would not have thrived in this time period.
