A highland classic. Katherine and her family leave the city in search of a simpler life running a croft by Loch Ness. This is a tale about stepping back in time to a slower paced era of helpful neighbours and being at the whim of nature. Perhaps some of it is rosey tinted, and the style a little lacking in detail. If you want an in depth history of crofting you would do better to read her book Crofts and Crofting. It does, however, show the reality of this life is not a pastoral dream, and her husband has to work away for weeks at a time to make it possible. It is a nice gentle read for anyone who wonders about the reality of crofting.
