Has anyone else used Kickstarter to fund self-publication of their book?
I am a do-it-yourself kind of guy and love the freedom Kickstarter gives self-publishers. It directly connects the reader with the author without the many intermediaries found in the traditional publishing industry. It saves the reader money and the pain of finding the ‘right book’ while helping the author avoid the hassle of the glacial pace of corporate publishing, salesmen, wholesalers, rude clerks, empty shelves, and sold out notices. With self-publishing, I get to pick my own team, the cover artist, editor, and printer. I can also decide what to do on my own, like interior design and formatting my book to hardcover, softcover, and ebook. In essence, Kickstarter gives the author freedom to publish his book as he so wishes and gives the reader what he wants, great fiction at a discount rate.
