Spring Challenge
Duration: 1st Sept - 30th Nov 2020
Level:
0/?

Listed below are some things one might encounter during the spring months.

We will have three levels to choose from:
Easy: 8 books (minimum 2 AAs)
Medium: 14 books (minimum 3 AAs)
Hard: 20 books (minimum 4 AAs)

There are five ways to complete an item, and these can be mixed/matched; however, you must read a minimum of 8 books in order to complete the challenge. A book may only be used one time.

Guidelines HERE

Ways to Complete an Item:
(1) Title:

The first letter of each title word found in the item; no word count limit, but all words count.

(2) Author:
The author's first and last initials found in the item

(3) Cover:
The item is found on the cover. Please post the cover.

(4) Text:
The item or phrase can be found in the text of the book. Please provide page/location number, and sentence containing the word or phase. Word/phrase must be exact - no substitutions.

(5) Spell Out:
Spell out the item by using the first letter of a book title or the first letter of the author's first or last name. Please Note: If choosing this option to complete your challenge, you must spell out enough words to cover the 8 book minimum. For example: You could not simply spell out BULBS, as it only represents five letters. You would need to spell out additional word/s to reach the 8 book minimum.

I'm assuming that 8-13 books is Easy, 14-19 is Medium and 20+ is Hard, provided you have sufficient AAs for each level.

Laur (httpswwwgoodreadscomlaur) I’m so sorry...I hate being daft in this subject, it looks like everybody understands but me 🤓...It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to join any challenges, and am considering that this one may be one I can do, but I can’t seem to find the challenge rules or what exactly is required in the books choosen. I surmise we must use words describing Springtime? Can you explain please additional instructions? (Or point me to proper thread?) Many thanks!

Hi Laur💫, you're not being daft - it took me a while to get my head around this challenge, too! My interpretation is that you have two options, which you can combine to get to your Easy (8-13), Medium (14-19) or Hard (20+) level:
OPTION 1: read books to match the words, which must include: (a) ALL the initials of the book's title (including A, an, the etc.); OR (b) BOTH the author's first AND last initial; OR (c) The item appears on the cover; OR (d) the exact word or phrase is contained in the text.
AND / OR
OPTION 2: Choose any one or more words from the list and complete them in normal Spell-it-Out style, so that each letter of the word(s) is represented by: (a) The first letter of the title (not including A, An, the); OR (b) The author's first initial; OR (c) The author's last initial.

For example, you might choose to do Medium level by completing 8 of the words using Option 1, and a spell-it-out for the word RAINBOW. You can't use a book more than once.

You're not the only one confused by this, Laur💫. That's why I'm opting for spell-it-out, the other options were too confusing to wrap my head around at first. I think I understand now, but I'm still going to find it easier to just stick to the spell-it-out option

Thanks Sarah. I might just play it safe and add a 4 letter word to the end to take me to the 14 required for Medium

Thank you Sarah for your help and explanations! And I just found out something I had NOT REALIZED until this moment.

On my PC (Computer) I can see the 1st entry with ALL the Guidelines, Words and Instructions.

However, on my iPad tablet (which I was initially using to look at the challenge) DID NOT include ANY of that information. It only included very short posts - abbreviated from the original post. Respondents were the same way, and I had no idea why they were choosing what they were choosing.

Mystery solved... the information CAN ONLY BE FULLY SEEN when looking at the thread on a PC.

Yes, the GA App is deficient when it comes to reading or commenting on group posts. It's a real pain! I try to keep a tab open to the GR page (not app) on my browser app on my tablet, purely to access the group boards, but it's constantly prompting me to move to the app.

Teresa, you've misread the instructions I'm afraid. With Allergies, The Long Road Home needs T, L, R, H to be in Allergies. Blooms needs the T, W etc - do you understand? Reread the instructions at the top - the book title should have EVERY letter in the word, the author BOTH initials in the word...
