His Imaro books are first rate. It is really a shame his works weren’t picked back up by a major publisher. I would like to see his uncollected works together in an anthology.
Charles was a legend, and part of a select group of S&S writers that personified the genre in the 70’s. He was of course the father of Sword and Soul, and forged a new and exciting path for the next generation of black authors in the field of fantasy fiction. Another giant has fallen.

Now I need to find the box that includes my books with authors whose last names start with SA.
His work had been on my list to read, but I regret that I didn't get to it before his death.
I just heard of his passing from Joe Bonadonna. We'd shared some emails recently and letters, but I had not heard from him in months. Our through-the-mail friendship goes back to 1977. Dear God, this is a terrible loss. He not only was a giant of fantasy literature but an excellent writer overall, as well. He wrote a regular newspaper column in Nova Scotia until his retirement and books of reportage, as well. I admit I am still shaken by this as I write.
Ohhh...no. First I've heard of this also. I had only casual, occasional contact with Charles but have known his work since becoming acquainted with him via David C. Smith, ages ago. Our field has lost a remarkable talent, sage, and immensely respected gentleman and a genuine model of dignity and humanity.
R.I.P., Charles. Your indomitable spirit remains ever-present, your work at arm's length...
"It is with profound sadness that I must inform you all that Charles Saunders, author of Imaro and Dossouye and creator of Sword and Soul, has passed away. According to the information I was able to gather, he passed away sometime in May from natural causes. I was informed yesterday. This is all the information I have. I know that we will remember him and the legacy he has left for us as one of the pioneers of Black Speculative Fiction. He will be truly missed."
So Nov-Dec Groupreads will be in his honor.
