Last week we had a discussion on the book title.
What does the title mean to you?

Clopha Deshotel | 1 comments Some things, like a harmless bird in this case, create joy and deserve our protection so that it can continue to create joy. Protecting children so that they can safely reach adulthood is a forgotten them in this book (and movie adaptation). Mayella could not safely reach adulthood due to her abusive father, and no mom. Scout did and was able to re-tell this story.

Audrey (audreyt) | 1 comments I think it's a metaphor for the injustices that occur in the book and still exist in a democratic society. Although our legal system is supposed to be impartial, justice isn't always served; Tom Robinson is convicted despite there being a reasonable doubt of his guilt. He testified that he only wanted to help the defendant, and yet he was imprisoned and died as a result of his efforts. Boo Radley came to the aid of the children in their moment of need and would have been subjected to a trial had it not been for the compromise of two compassionate characters. Scout learns from these experiences and creates the beautiful analogy herself.
