Where the crawdads sing by Delia Owens. An evocative, captivating story of strength, resilience, nature, survival, the indomitable human spirit in the face of rejection, abandonment, hatred, prejudice, loneliness.

Kya Clark, known as the ‘Marsh girl’, a ‘savage beast’ for outsiders, abandoned by her family and alienated by the town, left alone in the Marshland to fend for herself. An illiterate in the written language, but an expert in the language of nature. The story follows Kya’s solitary life in the Marsh, from an abandoned child to an accomplished adult, exemplifying how opportunity and small acts of kindness by strangers can go a long way. The time-line shifts between Kya’s growing up years to the present-day murder of Chase Andrews, a popular member of the community.

The start was a little slow but after that the story was gripping, simple writing dotted with beautiful poetry. As a nature and wildlife lover, I found, Delia Owens vivid imagery of the flora and fauna of the marshlands, both serene and exciting. It was an enjoyable read throughout, but the last 50-60 pages sealed the deal. After finishing the book, I was left overwhelmed with a concoction of emotions. I have been struggling to write about this book, no matter how articulately I write, it just does not do justice to Delia Owen’s words. It’s a story that simply has to be read.
