This is a critically acclaimed book that was on several “Most Anticipated” books lists, and after finishing it in a few hours, I can say that the author’s writing is pure poetry and this is an impressive debut by Raven Leilani. It’s also very (darkly) funny. But the topic - 23-year old Black woman struggling with finances, career and relationships gets entangled with a middle aged, white lover and then moves in with him, his wife and adopted kid - is not for everyone. The writing isn’t salacious, even though an open marriage is part of the storyline. She is described as a Flaneur, one who idles or lounges, and she does a lot of that in the book, while narrating in a blase tone. Not a lot of action happening here but the writing kept it interesting. 4/5 stars.

Debut novel. This book was uneven but grew on me; I've given it 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 and have higher expectations for the author's next effort.
The first half of the book seemed jumbled and forced with the main character drifting though reckless personal and professional interactions, seemingly numb and lost, seeking pain and humiliation. Her personal growth and self actualization as as artist come later via her female relationships, potentially leaving her better grounded for the next phase of her life.
