Hey guys! Thanks for starting this club!

Now, our first order of business...what book should we choose to read? :)

Before we begin, I suggest two things to take into consideration:

1. Our individual abilities to access each book

2. Timeframe and individual availability to read the chosen book

If you believe that you have any issues with (1), please feel free to send me an email and I may be able to assist you with gaining access.

On Subreply, Chetan suggested two books that we may read:

1. Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. Authored by Harold Abelson, Gerald Jay Sussman, and Julie Sussman

2. Hackers & Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age. Authored by Paul Graham, Allen Noren (Editor), and Matt Hutchinson (Editor).

Personally I would be fine with either of these choices.

If anyone has any book suggestions please add them here!

John (jlj7) | 3 comments I too would be fine with either. :-) I'll throw out a few more; they're sitting on my shelf right now (inducing a not-inconsiderable amount of guilt ;-) ):
- The Glass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse
- The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu
- Star Maker by Olaf Stapledon
- The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe
- Permanent Record by Edward Snowden

SCIP takes a good two to three months to read! It's not casual whatsoever. Hackers and Printers is a better alternative :)

John's recommendations seem more sane!

The Three-Body Problem sounds good to me! Does that work with you Chetan?

Sure, let's give it a read!

Great! What is a good length of time for each of you to complete this? Say, a month or so?

Yeah, that sounds reasonable. Just finishing up another book at the moment, and, with young kids, I seem to do most of my reading before bed.

One month sounds good, how about we discuss it on October 17th which happens to be a Saturday?

I'm struggling with the book. I read about 50 pages and more or less gave up. I simply seem to be unable to connect to what the author is saying :/

Aw I'm sorry! That's rough :/

If it helps, the large amount of context that author gives does begin to make sense a bit further in.
