Rachel,Rachel,Rachel,,,,,what can I say, for stardom and putting yourself out there on Youtube is what is scary. We all know that we need to make a living, but at to what expense? What do you think of people who make a living on Youtube? Would you do it? Why or why not?

Haha Ruth, I would have laughed at you too if you came back with that toothpaste....But I did something and didn't know it, but a very long time ago, I was with my mom and took her to Walmart they had this new one opening. And I tried on some pants, and really liked them. So I threw them over my shoulder because I had that small blue carrier and forgot all about the pants, I checked out, and walked out the store, and when I got to the car to open it up, I was getting in the car seat when the hanger on the pants tipped over in my face, and I realized that I didn't pay for them, and walked right on out the store. So I put my bag in the car and went back in the store and went up to the cash register that I left from, she was on another person so I waited, and told her what I did and she laughed and said, " I didn't even see them either", and I paid for them and we came on home.....
******************************** On the other hand*************
I was a good tester for Cherries and Grapes...Yes I will clean off a few in the grocery store and pop them in my mouth,,thats also considered stealing,,,I would buy the bag IF the Cherries or Grapes are good. I got hooked on those Cotton Candy Grapes Until the price went too high for me....

David Taylor (datamonkey) | 7 comments I have to admit that I can't help but admire people who have the bullet-proof self-esteem to put their lives out there to be judged and picked over.

I'm far too "English" lol. If people trolled me for my personal qualities and life choices I'd just cry I think.

Of course Rachel was self-assured to the point of arrogance, but I couldn't help but like her.

I really enjoyed this book by the way. At the start I thought it might be a bit "Shopaholic" for me, but I liked it more as I went through.

Hey David, yes, I thought she might have been one of those women who seem to get into trouble and her money would get her out. But in this case, I was just as shocked as anyone else.

So lets get started on the computer and these YouTube people who seem to have it all by making tons of money and staying at home. The fame of it all. And just to think that millions of folks watching you, and you just don't know WHO these people are. I wouldn't like my face out there like that, for it can get you into serious trouble...hummm

David Taylor (datamonkey) | 7 comments It is a worry when "ordinary" people make their private life public, particularly if they are blurring the line between two personas. It used to be the case only with pop stars and film stars, and here in the UK particularly with royalty.
There is a perception that because they earn a living from the public, we somehow own a little bit of them, and this is okay when they have a record label or royal family to shield them, but when it's the unfiltered world of anonymous subscribers and followers, that protection isn't there.
Of course, that can work both ways, as Rachel showed lol

message 7: by stephanie, MOD (new)

stephanie | 1609 comments Mod
Thank you David, so let me ask you something. If an "Ordinary" person becomes famous on what you pay out, such as donations, or so many subscribers, then you are owned by the people who pay put, right? For instance, Rachel has this Youtube show with her friend, who makes tons of money by way of how many viewers right? I'm not for sure exactly how it works, but that's what I think is how they get paid, I'm not for sure,,,Over in the U.K., the Queen and King gets paid by you (citizens) so they became rich by you all right? Educate me if I'm wrong...

message 8: by David (new)

David Taylor (datamonkey) | 7 comments Weeellll, as far as the Royal family are concerned, all their expenses and luxurious living is paid for out of taxes, and most of the property they use (palaces and paintings etc) is owned by the Crown. this means that they couldn't sell Buckingham Palace and buy an exotic island instead. It's kind of owned by the public. They receive money from the Civil List which comes directly from the tax payer. They even decide how much tax they pay lol.
As far as Rachel and her like are concerned, I'd say "donations" is a very good way of putting it. You are subscribing in the expectation of getting access to the sort of content you want, but it's all voluntary and you have no right to anything that the site owner produces.
If a subscriber doesn't like the content, they can just unsubscribe and look elsewhere. Unfortunately (some would say) we have no say in whether we have a royal family or who is part of it....

I read this one a few weeks ago, so I've already forgotten some bits...

Am I allowed to ask what the "breaking and throwing things that caused her to bleed" bit was about - I don't remember it. Was it in the guy's house ?

David, it boils down to the citizens are paying for the King and Queen in your country, maybe just a tad bit different than ours here, but WE AMERICANS are paying quite a bit for Nothing right about now. But at any rate, Rachel is getting paid by Youtubers, those seem to be the ones that loves her and her partners exercise/Yoga classes, and she seems to really like being in the lime-light. It makes me laugh to see there women sweat it out, and then they have perfect make-up on their face..haha.. She seems to be the go getter in this book, and yep, she is.

Members, this book is pretty good, it's abut a female who is a Youtuber who has classes on-line for exercise. So as she is working her body out, many people watch her, and yep, one in particular....Now I don't mind watching YT ( Youtube) for arts and crafts and how to make things, you have sicko's who like to watch for other reason's,,know what I mean?

David Taylor (datamonkey) | 7 comments Hi Stephanie - sorry, but I'm not quite sure how this thread works I'm afraid. Do we avoid spoilers ?

message 13: by David (new)

David Taylor (datamonkey) | 7 comments I think I'm going to have to go back and re-read the book. It was good enough to read again and with books like this everything looks different in a new light.

Go for it David. It is mid-month, and usually spoilers are involved at this point (smile)

Anyone want to think about what you would do or say if the security officer caught you stealing? Would you just take the punishment, or cut a deal? And if you cut a deal, just what would the deal be? Sex, Money, a car, just how low or high would you go?

message 16: by stephanie, MOD (new)

stephanie | 1609 comments Mod
Remember Ruth, the security guard asked if she was married or was that her boyfriend that she was working out with on Youtube. I would have told him yes, because you see what happened when she said no,,,With the way that she describes him, I don't think he would float my boat...

message 17: by David (new)

David Taylor (datamonkey) | 7 comments but the whole shoplifting thing wasn't what it seemed though was it ?? Wasn't it part of the long game ?

message 18: by stephanie, MOD (new)

stephanie | 1609 comments Mod
I believe so. For someone to come in a shop and steal, and automatically know who that person is, unless its a movie star or sometimes not even that. But the length that he went thru just so he can be " Her boyfriend" and I believe Ruth ( are you still with us ) that someone got beat up just outside his apartment. But what got me was when she drugged him so she can go to his apartment and look for that thumb-drive....haha, and someone seen her leaving..haha...

Haha, you got that right Ruth....I'm thinking she probably looks like that young girl Ariana Grande type, you know she has to be small, light-bulb frame,,,,

I told my daughter about the internet, and I have to say its pretty good for some, and for others it could be horrible. Take for instance the Dating online, NEVER will do that, for your looking for trouble. Then the scams on sending money to some Russian Blonde chick who wants to come to America and marry someone who looks like Barney Fife, but first her parents need $$$$$$$...The DNA companies that link you up with ancestors or relatives you don't know, INCLUDING someone who you may NOT know who may have killed,,,the list goes on....and now this booty-shaking Rachel and her case....

Ruth, what did you think of the train scene, where he stood on the train tracks thinking he was going to commit suicide? That scene reminded me of that one part on Saturday Night Fever, when they were on the bridge. ...I don't know if I could do a Rachel scene, she went a bit off for me...But when Daniel ( I think that was his name ) tore up that Tesla, That would have ended it for me....busted out windows and spray paint on the car,,,,But Rachel was just as bad with tearing up his apartment....

Jimmie | 303 comments I'm at about the third of the way through the book and I have a question about something Rachel did to Dennis after she drugged him with Ambien. What did the baby oil between his toes and the ice cube in his ear do? I know the black marks on his fingers would cover his eyes and the pepper sauce would cause pain, but I'm not sure about the course of action with the baby oil and the ice cube.

Jimmie | 303 comments Ruth wrote: "Classic childhood pranks. The ice would slowly melt and when he woke up and sat up water would go down his neck. The baby oil would cause him to slip and fall. It’s seemed a little odd for a grown ..."

Ruth, thank you for clearing up my confusion. That makes much more sense now. You have a great connection to the heartbeat of this book.

message 25: by stephanie, MOD (new)

stephanie | 1609 comments Mod
I am so glad that Ruth cleared this up because the only thing that I know about is the baby oil being rubbed on the feet, not through the toes per-se, but I was thinking that he would slip and fall, but oil sinks in your skin sooner or later, so I was confused,

Jimmie | 303 comments I finished reading The Perfect Liar and I posted my review to Goodreads. Wow, what an amazing and fun book to read. I was absolutely blown away with this book. Wow, what a book!

message 27: by Jimmie (new)

Jimmie | 303 comments Ruth, I agree with your take on the ending. I featured your explanation of the pranks in my review of the book. Dennis not only stole Rachael's father, but he also stole her youth and innocence.

I also found it ironic that Rachel stole from The Treasure Trove only to have her treasure buried. I love how the author put so many twists into this book. I also liked how she broke up the book with telling the story from Rachel for part of the book, from Dennis for part of the book and back and forth to the end.

Jimmie | 303 comments Stephanie, thank you for choosing The Perfect Liar for the group to read. I know it is not easy to pick favorites, but I would like to say this was one of my favorite books we have discussed.
