https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/2...

FIRST: Please vote on the poll for what we can make this story about!! This doesn't open until the 19th, so we'll have to wait a couple days.

SECOND: Okay, you might have noticed that both this and the other poll don't have genre restrictions for you to vote on, nor in the title. This is because I am going to let YOU decide the genre! I thought this would be a nice spin on it and giving each of you more freedom in your writing! Have fun and make sure to vote by midnight, the 26th of September Mountain State Time.

THIRD: As soon as we have the poll results (when it ends) you may begin to write! The deadline should be two weeks after that (14 days or the 10th of October).

FOURTH: Thank you all! I hope we can have many entries and a fun two contests!!!

I'm okay with this being posted on the group blog (with proper credit, but I'm not worried about that. ;))

“This means war…”

Aurora’s heart seemed to freeze. “No. Not after so long.”

When Kayden spoke, he sounded like he was going to throw up. “I hate it, but it’s true. They’ve finally broken the peace. Well, officially.”

She fell to her knees. “But… we were so close…”

He knelt to comfort her. “We tried our best, Ror. But… some people just can’t be stopped when they want to commit needless violence.”

She pushed him away. “No! I can’t believe it. I refuse to. We could have stopped this… we still can! All we have to do is… get out there. Do something! We can’t just let this happen.”

She was met with silence. Slowly, she reached out. “K-Kayden? Are you there?”

“Yes, I’m here,” he replied, but her relief only lasted a moment. “But we have some company.”

Swords were unsheathed. One of them bore the distinct sound of gleipnir, but only a trained ear would detect it. She took out her dagger and held it in what she hoped was a threatening way, but she honestly didn’t know what she would do with it.

Kayden moved to stand behind her, saying, “What do you want, Hewett? Surely you have more important things to do, with the war starting and all.”

Another voice came from near him. “Ah, so you heard about that! Very good news, but my men and I need to hold off on participating just yet.” It sounded like he was smiling. “You see, Abir, there’s something we need.”

Aurora didn’t dare turn around. She’d never heard that voice before, but there was only one person who called Kayden by his “true” name. “Hewett,” she spat.

“Ah, so the mysterious girl in the corner knows me! You’ve taught her well. Now, let’s not ruin all of that by deciding to be difficult.” His mock playful tone turned to something darker. “Where. Is. The sword?

After half a minute of silence, she heard swords hit a few times. “I’m not a patient man, Abir. You know how it is. Do we honestly have to suffer through the same cliches every time?” More silence. “Fine. Talk or the innocent little girl here gets it.”

Meanwhile, Aurora was trying to muster the courage to face what she knew would be a staredown behind her. She only made it halfway, though, when she felt a blade pressed against her neck. She froze.

“I’m not some little girl,” Aurora said, trying to keep her voice steady as she kicked in what she hoped was her attacker’s direction. “I’m the chosen-”

“I’ll talk!” Kayden yelled, cutting her off.

“No, no, I’m interested in what ‘big girl’ here has to say,” Hewitt said. “Wait your turn like a good little traitor.”

Aurora turned the rest of the way around, the dagger retreating enough to allow her to do so. “I am the chosen Bearer of the Sword, and ut nos auferat.”

The hilltop they were on disappeared - or it was supposed to, anyway - as she and Kayden materialized at the top of a distant valley.

“That was so risky, Aurora!” He yelled. “I had it handled!”

“Obviously not,” she replied with a sly smile. “We got out of there all right, and -”

“He knows you’re the Sword Bearer!”

And we know what he wants. And how to stop this war.” She looked up at him, pushing away the nagging thoughts about her fading sense of smell. “All we need is the Sword and a tower.”
