NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11175 comments Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology by Leah Remini, was very eye opening. I knew a little bit about Scientology, but I had no idea of just how much they required of people financially, and in terms of time away from their families. Children are often neglected. Babies are cared for by untrained teenagers, and no one cares if older children are in school. Many of the members live in poverty and owe large sums to the church. The Sea-Org concept is shocking to me. They sign a 1000 year contract to serve the church in this life and in future lives, not knowing that they're agreeing to live in poverty forever. There must be something very compelling about the classes for people to give up so much for them. And that's just from the first few chapters. I hate the way people treat one another in this religion. The rest of the book is very interesting, and I recommend it. Leah narrates the book herself, and she does a fine job.

ShazM | 484 comments I read this recently too. I suppose the people with charisma get helped to the top so they can influence everyone else. Perhaps their success is for the same reason there's a lucrative market for self-help books - I like some of them myself but I'm reluctant to spend a lot of money on them so I wouldn't get far in Scientology!

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12700 comments I normally don't even consider bio's, especially ones by celebrities'. However, after learning about the Mormon faith this year, this book appeals to me more each time I read a review. Not adding it, but keeping it on the back burner for future thought. Nice review Nancy, you have reeled me in a bit more.
