Hi all! I'll be adding stuff to post #3 once we start reading!2020 is an excellent year to (re)read this! Join us, there's still time to find the book if you don't already have it :)
I'd love to hear from everyone who's thinking of joining, and whether it's your first time reading, or if you'll be rereading.
I might skim to join you, since I read it last year this way and really loved it. I won’t spoil anything, I promise!
Anna I'm thinking of joining, just a bit worried about the chapter a day bit but I'll try my best to keep up. (First time read).
The chapters are super short in the beginning, so they’re easy to read in a couple of minutes! I like to read them just before I go to bed, or first thing in the morning. If you’re more worried about being able to stop after each chapter, I understand, but I promise it’s worth it! 😊
I'm checking in. I've participated in daily read last year. I loved the book and the discussion. I'm looking forward to reading a chapter every morning drinking coffee. Last year I've started with an ebook but bought a paperback somewhere in the middle of the month. I knew I'll read this again and hoped that we can read this book daily again.
I'll be around. I led the discussion last year in this group last year & posted my notes (all 20+ pages!) then. I guess they're still here some place. It's a fun book & someone always turns up something new.
Yes, I’ll link to Jim’s extremely detailed and informative notes from last year, and the discussion for that day, as we read each day’s chapter! There are open spoilers, but I’ll make sure to include information about which posts it’s safe to read.Just one week to October!
Popping in to say that I forgot that the ebook *is* available in the US, through Apple. So if someone wants to join but doesn't have time to find the physical book, check iBooks! In the UK it's also available from Amazon.
Welcome to Lonesome* October 2020!* or not so lonesome, since this is a buddy read :)
The book has a prologue, so you can start reading today if you want to. Or tomorrow, if that's how you'd planned it. The first chapters are extremely short, so it shouldn't take long either way.
How spoilers work in this thread: After it's October 1st in the Goodreads time zone, you can post open spoilers about the October 1st chapter. If it's already October 2nd in the GR time zone, and you haven't read the October 2nd chapter yet, don't read new posts that pop up. No spoiler tags needed, but never post about a chapter that's still in the future.
About reading the 2019 thread: If you want to read the discussion from the 2019 thread, you can safely start here. Stop when you get to September 30th if you haven't read the prologue yet.
The system is the same as this year. Open spoilers allowed after midnight Goodreads time. So you can safely read all comments with the date October 1st once you've read chapter 1, and so on.
Jim's notes: The "Chapters and pages" section in message #2 of this thread lists how many pages each chapter is, and links to Jim's notes for that day from 2019. Jim has read this book several times, and he has excellent notes on each day's happenings. There are no spoilers for things to come, just what has happened up to that point. You should definitely read the notes after reading each day's chapter! The notes were posted the day after, so if you don't want spoilers, only read the notes post, because the very next one might already discuss the next day's chapter!
Happy reading! :)
Jim's 2019 Notes for the cover, the title, the dedication, and the Prologue (5 posts)Open spoilers for the Prologue and the notes above allowed from now on!
It's the perfect year to read this since the moon aligns this month with the one in the book, a rare occurrence.
Yes, I'm so excited about that! I've been waiting for 2020 since I first read this in 2017, and checked the moon charts :D
https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/news/152..."October 2020 is a "Blue Moon" month with two full Moons. The first full Moon is on October 1st. The second, a so-called "Blue Moon," occurs on October 31st."
OMG!! Halloween is gonna also be a full moon??
Hell.
Yes!
Also, v excited to see what readers find this year!

And the prologue is so fun. Oh, I'm going to have so many new wild theories this year:)
Grace wrote: "Sounds fun! Wish it was on Kindle though and I can’t track a hard copy. :("I just bought it on Kindle Grace. I am in Australia but I got it from Amazon in America.
This is like mindfulness in book clubbing. Or like the book version of holding onto an M&M in your mouth til the candy coating goes away. Enjoy the pictures and speculate wildly on what you think is happening! And eat M&Ms!
@Phrynne good we have someone ahead of me in the timezone! I am in SE Asia and thought I’d be the only one actually having to wait a full day for PDT lol. Sooo only prologue at this time noh? I wouldn’t mind Snuff’s job, i think - remind me when we know more.
How many of us are reading this for the first time? One - me.
First time read for me too Grace. I am so far ahead in time zones that I just do everything one day later:)
Thanks for being patient, those of you who are living in the future! :)I'm reading for the third time.
So far I would like to know what Snuff was before he was summoned to be a watch dog. And the things in the mirrors creep me out because I have read too many horror stories about mirrors over the years. Mirrors are by nature spooky.
What we know so far:- Jack has a wand and knife. A wizard?
- He is digging for ingredients he needs for his work. A wizard???
- There is another wizard.
- Thing in the circle appeals Snuff’s desire.
- Thing in the trunk is just maybe leaning on violence
- Thing in the wardrobe is smart enough to negotiate.
- Things in the mirror are scared of Snuff.
- Snuff is a very good boy.
Wild guess: if one of the things in circle, steamer trunk, wardrobe get out, they can take Snuff’s place. Skeleton Key (movie) style.
I read the prologue last night and was thinking it might be fun to read this one aloud with my daughter. So i reread the prologue and then Chapter 1 this morning, and she's enjoying so far.
Amanda, how old is your daughter? There are some gruesome things later in the book, might be a good idea to read the chapters yourself first, and then decide if you need to omit some parts!

Official discussions: First Impressions *no spoilers* / Final Thoughts *spoilers*
Do not look at the blurb of any other edition except the linked/default one, because they contain massive spoilers. If you've already read it, please don't spill the beans!
We will be reading one chapter per day, since there are 31 chapters, one for each day in October. There is also a prologue, it's up to you if you want to read it on October 1st, or September 30th.
Please wait until GR time rolls around to a particular day before posting about it. No spoiler tags needed. If you absolutely must post about a future day's chapter, use spoiler tags and tell us which chapter you're talking about!
Happy October and welcome to the treasure hunt!
