Nick Pyenson works for the Smithsonian Museum of Natural history and has been involved in the study of whales both past and present. He has done field work collecting and studying fossil records of the evolution of whales as well as field work studying present day whales. Whales were originally land animals the size of a dog that became the magnificent giants we know today.
The book is divided into three parts past, present, and future. The past section deals with fossils, the collecting of them, and what we have learned from them. The present deals with what we have learned of todays whales as well as past and present whaling practices. The future discusses just that. What our actions past and present may mean for the future of whales.
I have to admit I didn't understand everything Pyenson discussed and used the dictionary frequently for words I had never heard before. This did not stop me from enjoying the book and has made me want to learn more There is a ton of information that is backed up scientifically. This book is for anyone interested in whales.
