Hi. I still haven't started it, but I hope to do so before going to sleep.

I'm currently somewhere in chapter 9 and I had a shock which is the reason I decided to write in the thread now.

I really like the banter between Wax and Wayne :D I'm even thinking that I like them more than the originals.. But that could possibly be because here we have less characters to follow. I like the butler, he reminds me of someone from the original books, but I'm not sure who, maybe the kandra. Or maybe it reminds me of someone in the audio form since the same narrator is reading it. I like Marasi.

Chapter 9 (view spoiler)

I read up to chapter 12.

It's really interesting. Now I'm wondering why I hadn't been able to get into it the last time I tried reading it? Maybe I had high expectations since I enjoyed the original Mistborn books, and I was dreading the disappointment. Now in hindsight I'm wondering why because I don't think there was a Sanderson book that disappointed me.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 184 comments I just finished the prologue yesterday. The chapters in this feels longer (given that they are a few chapter only). I will hopefully catch up.

I read the mistborn trilogy a couple of years ago and I too dropped this book after The Hero of Ages at that point for the same reason. And it took this long to pick it up :)

The first one-third of Elantris felt that way to me. No matter how disappointing it feels in the early parts, Sanderson will make it up with the climax and ending. That's my belief.

The chapters are not that long, at least those that I payed attention to. But as you read more you get into the story and the pages fly by. I started yesterday and read 13%, and today I got to 60%.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 184 comments Wow, you are moving fast.
Thank you for motivating me. I will hopefully make some progress today :D

I needed some motivation on my own to start it too 😂 I said I'll have to get to 30% today, before I can read anything else.. so I had to 😂 but it got interesting before those 30% which is the reason I got that far.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 184 comments Unfortunately I am not so disciplined (my life doesn't allow me to) 😂. But even I cant stop reading when the book gets interesting. Just waiting to hit those parts. :)

luna ☾ (lunargoddessera) Hi everyone! I'm only at 42% myself :D And I must say that I am rly enjoying this. I was really worried it would not live up to Mistborn in terms of my enjoyment for it, since "Western" is not really my thing ever. But I love Wax and Wayne. Their dynamic is so enjoyable lol and I'm scared someone is gonna die and make me sad lol.

I had to start this book 3 times in the past before this time lmao but I finally made it. This book feels so much lighter than the original trilogy which is why I think we're enjoying these characters a bit more, Mina XD

Wow, you started it more times then I, but even though I started it last time I had a hard time actually sticking to it and reading it. And yes, it's so lighter than the original I LOVE that, that's probably the reason I flew through it yesterday... and I'm planning on finishing it today 😅

I finished it.

The plot is meh, it exists but I'm not impressed with it. BUT the characters are GOLD. I just love the Wax and Wayne's banter.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 184 comments Ok, I got to Chapter 7 where I think there is going to be some good action. At this point it is quite tough to put down. Compared to the original trilogy, the tone is lighter and probably its why I am enjoying it more. Mina, you are right :)

I am enjoying Wax and Wayne's banter. I also like Marasi and her conversations with Wax. I can see myself finishing atleast half the book by the end of today.

Chapter 7 is still the beginning for things.. you'll see. And I didn't finish it in two+ days because it wasn't interesting 😂 when it hooks you it's a bit hard to put it down.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 184 comments Usually Sanderson does that with his climax for me. But I love getting hocked to it so early. :D

OK, this happened so suddenly that it didn't even give me time to prepare for it's arrival. That's really shocking and unexpected.

I know, right? Like boom! so out of nowhere

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 184 comments Yeah. I had to read it again just to confirm what happened.

I like being shocked though. Doesn't happen so frequently. It's 1 am but I can't stop reading this book.

luna ☾ (lunargoddessera) SAME omg i was shookt. I didn't expect that to happen at all? I was hoping I was wrong cause I liked the idea of a slightly sassy butler lol

I have no idea where I am in the book (I have just a bit more than 2 hours left) so I'm not gonna say this outright: but just the part where Wayne told Marasi about his past? made me love wayne to the moon and back. he is such a stupid sweetheart. The dynamic and the chemistry between these three is so effing good :')

I cant feel anything but sorry for Wayne while he was telling the story. He was too sweet :)

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 184 comments I finished it yesterday night. As it was said earlier, the plot is quite simple. I loved the storytelling and characters, so that works for me. I love Wayne more. The epilogue gave me goosebumps. I am excited for the next book in the series.

Are we reading Shadows of Self in November?

message 25: by mina, Group/Buddy Reads Procrastinator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Yes, we are reading it :D We'll make plans next week or when November starts.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 184 comments November is a big Sanderson month. :D
Dawnshard and Rhythm of War are coming out too! :)

I haven't read that series 😅 I started the first book and something didn't sit right with me and I dropped it 🙈 But I will pick it up.. sometime in the future.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 184 comments You should! That series is much better than Mistborn in terms of the grandeur and scale imo. It is huge, and needs patience in the beginning. Not much explanation comes your way (particularly with Szeth and the lashings). But once it starts, it goes smoothly.

The only thing the book tests is your patience. Since each book comes once in 3 years, it is tough to wait and remember what happened in last book. I only remember bits and pieces from Oathbringer. You probably can probably pick it up when the next book comes (in 2023). The series is a 5 + 5 kind, like how mistborn is 3 + 3 (or 4). The next book would complete the current story arc.

I wasn't getting how things were working and that annoyed me, so I think that was the reason I just gave up after 50-ish pages.. But I will give it a second chance.

When would you guys like to read the next book?

luna ☾ (lunargoddessera) Since we're starting Winter this saturday, I can maybe read this as soon as monday and onwards. Like anytime. I'm just so excited to continue

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 184 comments I might start around mid November. Got my birthday and my daughter's in the first couple of weeks, and it's going to keep me busy 😅

I'm okay with mid November, so when you have time tell us to make a more detailed plan. And I'll just ask for a thread in November nominations so that when we do have a schedule we already have a thread.

Kristina (kristina3880) | 178 comments I finished this book. I read Mistborn era 1 last year and was blown away by it. This was good for what it is. I really love sanderson characters, especially the Wax and Wayne banter. It was so entertaining. I did enjoy the little snippets of era 1 character discussion amongst our new cast of characters. I am looking forward to continuing the series.

Nov 17-23?
I kind of have an open schedule post mid november, so anything works.

That works for me. I'll probably start it later than the 17th because I have some other buddy reads at that time, but I'm counting it's still a fast read :D so it's no problem. I'll make the schedule for 3 chapters a day starting on the 17th

Edit: noup, it'll be 4 chapters a day

luna ☾ (lunargoddessera) I am very much in you guys! I've been waiting since the day we finished this one 😅
