I have not read anything by Eric Smith. Contemporary, realistic fiction is my go-to genre, so this is the kind of book I would read even if it were not chosen as a book club pick. I hope romance does not overshadow the rest of the plot.
I'm excited for this book! It does indeed seem to be more like a realistic contemporary than a science fiction, which is usually the genre for books involved in gaming (see: Otherworld, Warcross, etc.)I haven't read any of Smith's books before, but I'm hoping this one will be a good one! There's not enough male writers in YA, if you ask me! :)

I'm embarrassed to admit that I cannot think of any gaming-themed books I've read, so I appreciated your insight on this. The premise of Don't Read the Comments sort of reminds me of Eliza and Her Monsters, which we read for book club in 2018. Instead of going into a virtual reality world, I thought gaming might be used like the way fandoms have been in other books I've read (i.e., as a way for the characters to connect over the Internet). I am interested to read the book and find out.
