Does anyone have any positive experiences with book clubs? I tried to join one with fellow NYU grads (where I graduated) but they had a tendency to pick NYT's Bestsellers and stuffy white dudes every time. I was often the odd person out ranting about racism/sexism/terrible writing.

I've also unsuccessfully tried to start a somewhat correspondence book club with long distance friends. No luck.

I have never tried to join a Book Club. I just read whatever I feel like reading.

so kind of long distance chess was my idea. having conversation solely through letters. My wife has so many pen pals and mine never stick.

This would be around the same book.

I also thought it could include a sisterhood of the traveling pants thing where someone finishes a book and then sends it along. I just like discussing books and it's hard to find people who are reading the same thing.

I've never tried book clubs either. I can't even fit in with any online writing forums. I just like to go my own way, I suppose.

Maybe if we get enough people in this group we could have our own book club?
A new thread every fortnight for a specific book possibly?
Then only people who want to read that particular book can contribute to the thread.

I'd be down for the book club. And the pen pal thing too actually hahaha

Traditionally, you basically just write letters back and forth. Or I guess emails if you wanted to be more modern about it.

Yes I think a thread for a book club would be good. I guess someone needs to choose a book to start off with. *cue arguments*

We could always just dump suggestions into a database and then randomize it to spit out the selection. Might be easiest. Unless people want more of a democracy and campaigning for selections

Maybe get several books from the randomizer and have a vote.

I've always listened to music while studying, but for some reason the idea of listening to music while reading for non-educational purposes seems strange to me

I've never listened to music while reading for fun, but if I'm reading for school, I like a lot of jazz music. That way, there aren't any lyrics for me to get distracted by!

I love listening to Assassins Creed soundtracks while I read!

Yeah, I listen to the Legend of Zelda soundtracks while reading. But I keep it on a really low volume so it's softer than background noise.

Book clubs seem to be non-existant in my area.

I don't have a quota, I just read untill I can't read anymore. (Usually a few hours before the alarm clock goes BEEP BEEP.)

My quota's a little closer to 50 pages/day. I do kinda vary that though depending on the size of font and such

I tend to try and get a couple of chapters when I get the time. Makes more sense to me than the number of pages.

I try to read at least like 50 pages/day at least. But since I commute about 3 hours in a given day by train, on weekdays I usually blow that out of the water.

I go more by time than by page. I have tons of time (yet it gets distracted somehow), so I try and read 2hrs a day. I knock off 30 minutes easy during my break at work/school (I'm a teacher).

I used to try to hit 100 pages per day (long train commute here as well) but I'm trying to read more theory relevant to my degree and it's fallen off quite a bit.

I somehow had no idea we could create polls!
I'll use this in future to elicit votes for books, much cleaner and organised than an entire thread :D

Accounting sounds like it'd be a lot of hard work! I just finished at McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada). Chemical engineer here.

Oh I wish I could, I actually know which one I'd get, his name is Blitzen and he's a little grey and white, 3 month fluffball in my local rescue center.
But I live in apartment that doesn't allow pets, and I don't think its fair to have a rabbit kept in a hutch. My mum has an old closet in the kitchen that see gutted and converted into 'Rabbit Corner'. All his bedding and litter tray is in there, then opposite that is the back door into the paved garden, he can run in and out as he pleases.
I wouldn't have a rabbit unless I had a similar setup, no matter how much I pine for one.

Hi! I haven't posted much yet but will give it a try! I'm from Norway working as a drafter/CAD designer working in a Norwegian company called UMOE Mandal. Sadly I got laid off and will be unemployed 1st May, after that who knows! LoL

I am from Georgia, USA and I work as software support for the WEBEOC software product. Me and my wife raise pigeons and doves and sell them as house pets. I figured I would share since everyone else seems to be.

I'm in New York City (from Texas) and I work as a Program Manager at an After School Program. But sadly do nothing as cool as raising pigeons and doves.

No. He has racing homing pigeons. We raise Classic Old Frill and Archangel pigeons. (I know you were making a joke, nut we ship all over the lower 48 states in the USA, so I take every chance for shameless self promotion.)

Saskatchewan, Canada here and I work in Industrial construction currently at a uranium mine in the north. It is a fly in camp which allows for lots of time reading.

I used to play some GURPS campaigns with a few friends. I have been working on designing a custom system, but motivation is low with only one other person that wants to play in it.
