Tell us your preferred genres, and we'll find a really great book for you!

message 2: by the bard (new)

the bard (ken97) | 836 comments hi! i've been reading a lot of adult books lately and anything slightly ya has been trash... so i'm looking for GOOD ya that i won't rant about! i like sci fi and fantasy, and really hate contemporary and romance (i'd prefer books with little to no romance in them). i think i'd prefer a good fantasy bc that's honestly what i need rn... please no fey. or hate-able characters. or anything ~nAsTy~

can't wait to hear your recs! thanks guys <3

Ah. AH. THIS IS MY SPECIALTY.

Ok, so this book is technically adult fantasy, but it doesn't have any gory content. The Priory of the Orange Tree. Best. Book. Ever.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik is really good, too. The Winternight Trilogy is also decent. It's not my favorite, but it's so unique.

message 5: by the bard (new)

the bard (ken97) | 836 comments i've been wanting to read priory for a while! it's just reallyyy long :/ idk if i'll like uprooted after the a deadly education catastrophe. idk, i might give it a chance. i don't think i've heard of the winternight trilogy; i'll definitely have to look into it! thanks, Sofia!

Uprooted is very different from A Deadly Education. It's magical.
Don't be discouraged by the length of Priory! It's so epic and beautiful. Even though I was reading it for a month, haha.

A C | 60 comments Hi yes hello: so I'd like some historical fiction with insane asylums? it can be ghosts or otherwise, idc. It can be adult or YA. I'd prefer it not to be too gory, as I don't always handle gore all that well, but anything else is fine? if y'all have any recommendations that would be epic

message 8: by sarah (new)

sarah (bookworm_s78) | 39 comments Raina Telgemeier's books are sooo good!

message 9: by Booktastically (new)

Booktastically Amazing (booktasticallyamazing) | 1477 comments I would totally recommend A Madness so Discreet. But you should be really aware of the intense themes described in the story. This book is definitely one of my favorites so yes, amazing!!

P.S: It may or may not be gory at times.

message 10: by ATheReader (new)

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) | 2746 comments A children's book where their mother is in an insane asylum is "The Secret of Nightingale Wood" by Lucy Strange. No gore, but it is not from the point of view of someone working there/an occupant. (So if you dislike children's POVs I wouldn't recommend- although it is not too childish)

message 11: by nanna (new)

nanna | 13 comments a mystery book that doesn't have gore and is not a horror. Like "One of us is Lying" but better quality bc I hated that one.

message 12: by ATheReader (new)

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) | 2746 comments Maybe "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder". Little to no blood and a very enjoyable book. I haven't read it but possibly "Truly Devious" as well.

Thanks, I had considered reading those!

message 15: by the bard (new)

the bard (ken97) | 836 comments truly devious isn't gory, it's just annoying tbh. the "mystery" continues for many books and there are 2 timelines, and neither are resolved. personally, i wouldn't recommend, but don't let me stop you lol

message 16: by the bard (new)

the bard (ken97) | 836 comments and for a classic that's easy to read, and then there were none was AWESOME. not gory, but very mysterious

A Very Large Expanse of Sea
- Muslim MC and emotional story

Eliza and her Monsters
- focuses on an introvert who writes webcomics and a friend who writes fanfiction for that comic
- delves into social anxiety, loneliness, family tension
- romance is more of a subplot, but it's really cute

Noooo. Have you already read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier? It's not YA or fantasy, and you don't discover the villain until the end, but it's SO GOOD.

You Should See Me in a Crown is a great YA romance book with lgbtq+ representation which I would highly recommend! I also loved The House in the Cerulean Sea, and despite the fact it’s an adult fantasy book, it’s quite easy to follow and the lgbtq+ romance is amazing!!

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

ooh i'll check them out!
