It’s still YA in my opinion. To get higer it would need more violence as the smut part isn’t that and compared to the ACOTAR series

It is technically now adult (ACOSF will be) but if you take the smut out the plot of ACOTAR is quite basic so the plot falls into YA. The romance NA.

Honestly... I didn't mind it :D

I would agree that the plot is YA and the romance is NA. If you've read From Blood and Ash (a NA novel HIGHLY recommend if your looking for a good book, if you start reading it lmk cuz i want to know your thoughts) it definatly has more smut for sure adn is a true NA
I loved it, and it was really good, but I think if u had to classify them all it'd definitely be YA..... tbh I've read worse!😘😻😍🤗
I think these days while age matters, it doesn't as much as it may have used to? More teens who read stuff like this are more mature than most kids their age (At least in my experience) and they're gonna read what they want and if they don't like or want to read that type of romance then they can put the book down and find something else. I don't really like age ratings because every matures at their own pace and it depends on what type of household and values they've been raised in on if they can handle something like that.
I think it's you and only you who gets to decide what is ok and what is not for you to read..........if u feel like it's ok to read certain *things* then go for it but if u feel that you are not old enough then that's ok.
And sometimes even if you're "old enough" to read it you simply might not want to. I have friends you are like that

Aahana ♥ wrote: "ACOTAR is marketed as YA too right? Or NA? Cause I believe it's NA.."Till this year, it was YA:p But they are republishing the whole series(along with ACOSF) as NA soon
in my town library they have tog and folk of the air series in middle school part...and red queen in high chool and adult part
age range can't be decided anyway...in my experience- i might read an really descriptive romance *cough smūt*(idk if this app deletes "bad speech") book, and read a percy jackson book right after...i think that everyone should read everything they want , regardless of age range bc, for example, sometimes i just want to take a break from complicated stuff or something else. I hate when people basically age shame others for what they watch/read...take a break and read/watch whatever makes you comfy at the moment. that's it...
I agree, just keeping some trigger warning things for older ages (if a 12 year old tried to read a little life I would scream). Or younger kids reading lots of Colleen Hoover books, like lots of them have very toxic relationships. I think some books are for older people just because younger audiences may be impressionable where they think certain things are okay. Where as older ones know it isn’t the case
Yeah I definitely agree. Things got put into a different perception for me once I became a parent, though. Like, when I was my sons age (9) I had already watched all of the Nightmare on elm st movies at age 5 and a bunch of other horror movies and rated r movies and watched shows kike the sopranos and friends and the books I was reading were books I probably would think twice about letting my 9 year old read lol 😆 but when I was young I was always more mature for my age. So im definitely conscious of what I let him read. He’s reading the Percy Jackson series right now he’s on book 2 and loving it and I’m planning to get him the whole Harry Potter series. I’m so proud of him he’s only in third grade but he reads at an 8th grade level. ❤️❤️ when he was in 2nd grade he was at a 6th grade level it’s amazing. I’m so glad he’s into reading as much as I am.
Yk , for some reason I keep seeing 11,12, and 13 yr olds reading TOG and ACOTAR. I mean- TOG is fine for 13 ig but i dont think so. And ACOTAR DEF not......idk why they read it.
I mean , for me personally, if you skip the smut ACOTAR is fine. And I know lots of people do skip the smut (not saying everyone does) and if you do, it’s really fine for a 13 year old. Although I think it’s best for older audiences I think if the person is Mature enough , the fantasy aspect isn’t at all gory .
acotar was originally ya but it definitely is na and im seeing it more in the adult sections of bookstores too
I think where the debate, and confusion, comes in, is in the actual name Young Adult. If the genre is described as being written for readers between the ages of 12-18, then there is only a very small percent of that age range that is an actual adult, and to name that genre Young Adult is misleading. 12-17 is not young adult, because they are not adults. 18 to, let's say, 28 (or whatever everyone agrees is young) should be young adult, because they are actual adults who are young. But even deeper than that, I don't, personally, think that we should be classifying genres by the age of the reader. I think that it should go by the age range of the character(s). Teen should have characters that are 13-17. Young Adult should have characters that are 18-whatever age. Classifying a book by what the age range of the reader should be, leads to a lot of age shaming for reading what you want.
That's not to say that we shouldn't be concerned about young audiences reading extremely mature, toxic, or traumatizing content that might do harm on an impressionable mind. Rather, I find that a lot of people tend to gravitate towards genres, and read books, that have a main character that is close to them in age. (I realized this is not the case for everyone, I'm simply sharing my experience with what I have noticed.) So if genres were defined by the age range of the characters, we might have a better chance at protecting those impressionable minds since the genres wouldn't be marketed as something they would relate to. Once again, these are all just my own opinions, and I recognize that my theories/ideas come with their own issues- cause no answer/solution to the debate is ever going to be perfect. Feel free to disagree with me.
So in my version of what Young Adult should be, ACOTAR would fit in. Not just for the ages of the characters, but because it also has a lot more mature issues and themes than books in the YA genre (as we know it), -not just in terms of smuttiness.
But overall, I think that the ACOTAR series shouldn't be rated YA unless we redefine what the parameters of YA entail.
