I'm fed up with Spooky Booktober a little early this year. In audio this week, I finished Odd Thomas and The Turn of the Screw. I was really let down with latter, but I may still check out The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix.

Last night, I finished reading Lincoln in the Bardo and loved it. I tried the audiobook last year and just couldn't handle it, but strangely I couldn't put it down in print. It's an oddly formatted book and the audiobook didn't work at all for me.

I'm quitting on the Halloween reads early and moving on to the Giller shortlist now. I am currently listening to Polar Vortex and reading Ridgerunner next.

Susan | 852 comments Happy Friday! I'm excited about Bingo 2021!

This week I finished Halsey Street. This was a good read overall, although there was one storyline that really detracted from the novel. Still, I'm curious to see what this author does next.

I also read Good Talk: A Memoir in Conversations, a fantastic graphic memoir that was exactly what I needed right now as U.S. election day approaches. I also read Severance, a speculative novel about a pandemic that felt pretty real for obvious reasons. I enjoyed it.

I'm still reading Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents but should finish this one up over the weekend. I've also started Spirit Run: A 6,000-Mile Marathon Through North America's Stolen Land.

Elinor | 240 comments I’m excited because I learned today that one of the best books I have read for a long time, News of the World is now a movie starring Tom Hanks! Read the book first ... you won’t be disappointed.

This week I finished The Lost Apothecary which I really liked and The Stationery Shop, which was a slow read for me, but it did remind me how intensive love, especially the forbidden ones are.
Currently reading a romance The Unhoneymooners.

Mj @ Elinor & @ Alan - I too loved News of the World and chose it for an in-person book club. Was surprised by its popularity. There was not one member (15 ish) who didn't really like it or love it. Will have to pass along the news of it being made into a movie. Some members have gone on to read more by Paulette Jiles and enjoyed her other books as well. Plan to read more myself. Her research is exceptional and her writing makes you feel like you're "in the story." I think a movie will have a hard time measuring up.
