I know a lot of reviews of this book have compared it unfavourably to The Girl On The Train, but, although I have seen the film, I have never read the book, so my tepid review isn't cooled by comparison. It is just a feeling of so-so. I found it enjoyable to a point but it was more of a space filler for me that didn't hold my attention.
There are so many characters and points of view, that it is all a tad confusing. Most of the characters are not so much unlikable but rather they don't elicit much emotion at all.I don't know whether this was purposeful or whether there were so many characters that you couldn't get to grips with or feel any sympathy towards any of them.
I personally would have liked more of a witchcraft, atmospheric vibe throughout the book , as it was this aspect that made me pick it up in the first place. It was all a bit lack lustre and I felt there was no effort to build on the suspense. Even the ending fell a bit flat.
However, Paula Hawkins writing style flows across the pages expertly (see what I did there?) and was a redeeming feature. I would have liked a bit more oooomph to it though. An enjoyable throw away read. Three stars at best
