Sue | 431 comments Not sure if you're still looking for Tour Suggestions - but I reached that point in Tour 7 where one has the option to make a tour suggestion. My information below comes from Wikipedia.

Pope Gregory I Tour
In AD 590 Pope Gregory I revised [an earlier list of the seven deadly sins] to form the more common list (the list that we are using for this challenge.)

Seven Things to Know about Pope Gregory I, with prompts for book selections to complete the tour: NOTE You do not have to complete a book for each of the seven prompts. To get your total number of books you may read any combination of the prompts (you can double up or triple up some and skip others according to your reading preferences.)
For each book you read, indicate how it fits with one of the prompts.

1. The exact date of Gregory's birth is uncertain but is usually estimated to be around the year 540, in the city of Rome, then recently reconquered by the Eastern Roman Empire from the Ostrogoths.
Read a book that is set or is partially set in Rome or in Italy.

2. A Roman senator's son and himself the prefect of Rome at 30, Gregory lived in a monastery he established on his family estate before becoming a papal ambassador and then pope. Although he was the first pope from a monastic background, his prior political experiences may have helped him to be a talented administrator.
Read a book which includes a character that is a political figure.

3. He is known for instigating the first recorded large-scale mission from Rome, the Gregorian Mission, to convert the then-pagan Anglo-Saxons in England to Christianity.
Read a book in which someone travels to England/the UK, or which is set in England/the UK OR read a book in which a character's spiritual beliefs are important to the character or to the story.

4. Gregory is also well known for his writings, which were more prolific than those of any of his predecessors as pope.
Read a book written by a "prolific" author - (your definition of prolific here is up to you :)

5. The mainstream form of Western plainchant, standardized in the late 9th century,[51] was attributed to Pope Gregory I and so took the name of Gregorian chant. He is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers.
Read a book in which music is important to the story, or which has a character that is a musician, singer, student, or teacher.

6. Gregory is known for his extensive administrative system of charitable relief of the poor at Rome.
A broad definition of charity: the practice of being benevolent, giving and sharing.
Read a book in which one or more characters show charitable actions toward others.

7. In the modern era, Gregory is often depicted as a man at the border, poised between the Roman and Germanic worlds, between East and West, and above all, perhaps, between the ancient and medieval epochs.
Read a book set in ancient or medieval times OR read a book which is set in transitional times between epochs (your own interpretation of this is fine :) OR read any historical fiction book.
