This thread is to mark your completion of the November challenge to fulfill prompt #22 Read a book by or about a woman in STEM. You can join the group read or read a book of your choice.

Please include the following:

Title:
Author:
Would you recommend this book?

Heather (heatherbowman) | 916 comments Title: The Fiery Cross
Author: Diana Gabaldon
Would you recommend this book? That's complicated. I recommend the series, but this particular book is awful. I've read the next two, and they get better again.

This books fits the STEM prompt because Claire is a surgeon, and she does medical research in this book. She does experiments to create penicillin several hundred years before it was discovered.

Author: Barbara Goldsmith
Would you recommend this book? If you're looking for a quick, not too in-depth biography of Marie Cure, then yes. If you want to know every detail of her life and her discoveries, then, no. I'm not into science so it was perfect for me to get a little info without overwhelming me.

Author: Rebecca Dinerstein Knight
Would you recommend this book? Yes, Nell blew up the lab conducting some experiments. I'm not super into science, but this was a good middle of the road one.

Hex by Rebecca Dinerstein Knight

Harry Patrick | 109 comments Title: The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women
Author: Kate Moore
Would you recommend this book? Yes, I found the "story" compelling & yet sad in so many ways Would also work for prompt 21: a book featuring one of the 7 deadly sins. in this case greed for the factory owners.

message 6: by Drakeryn (new)

Drakeryn | 708 comments Title: A Deadly Education
Author: Naomi Novik
Would you recommend this book? Yes, if you're into stories about wizarding schools. The only caveat is that it's mostly slice of life - in a school full of deadly monsters, so it's exciting slice of life! - but there's not a lot of forward motion in the plot until the end.

This book fits the STEM prompt because the author, Novik, is a programmer/software developer. There's not much STEM in the actual book aside from a bit of magical metallurgy (is metallurgy STEM?)

Megan | 493 comments Title: What the Eyes Don't See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City
Author: Mona Hanna-Attisha
Would you recommend this book? YES!!! This was one of my favorite reads of the year. It might sound dry or depressing, but this was a compelling read not only about what happened in Flint, Michigan but also the author's family story. This book was hopeful, positive, and inspiring, even though what happened in Flint was beyond infuriating. I am so grateful that there are people in the world like Dr. Hanna-Attisha!

Author: Helen Hoang

Would you recommend this book?
For sure. This is a pretty woman reversal. The main character fits into STEM.

message 9: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) | 780 comments I read book two in a cozy mystery series for this one.

Title: The Probability of Murder
Author: Ada Madison (AKA Camille Minichino)
Would you recommend this book? Yes.

message 10: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 52 comments Title: Where the Crawdads Sing
Author: Delia Owens
Would you recommend this book? Yes!!

This book fits the STEM prompt because Owens is a wildlife scientist, which really shows throughout this story.

message 11: by Lilith (new)

Lilith (lilithp) | 1120 comments Title: Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl

Author:Stacey O'Brien

Would you recommend this book? YES! The author is a biologist, and worked at Caltech. Just fantastic! Not only about biology and animal behavior, but a deep read about love and trust and interdependence between species.

Stacey is such a great owl mum, but you never forget that she is a biologist. She has a microscope in her bedroom and kitchen!

Caution: Have a couple boxes of tissues towards the end! Soooo good!
