Sara Fultz (sarafultz) | 13 comments I read this book between 2009-2012, and I found it in my middle school library so it was YA. The cover had this blue illustration of the girls face with black hair swirling around and a symbol in her iris (Atlantis movie style, its why I picked it up in the first place). I remember at the beginning of the book she is in class and uses magic to help the class rats/mice escape their cage and go into the vent, but they can't go very far because she lives in a scientific facility at the bottom of the ocean that I *think* studies whale calls. She's very sad about her grandmother's recent passing and does magic that her grandmother taught her to feel close to her. At one point she is sitting on the floor and is able to summon her grandma's spirit to talk to before collapsing from exhaustion on her bed. There are also different kinds of whales all around the facility and at one point the girl talks to them near the end of the book (they're also magical? and they reincarnate her grandmother into their life cycle and name one of their newborns after her). I think there is also a killer whale that is the same ish age as the girl and they end up being friends? We might even see things from the killer whale's perspective from time to time. Thank you in advance for any help you can give. I'm pretty sure this was a single book but it's ending may have hinted at a sequel/series.
