What this is: Dale's story of his troubles with concussions, starting with a bad accident in 2012, his recovery, new ones and finally his retirement from auto racing.
While Dale wasn't the first athlete of a sport to discuss this--CTE had been brought the the public's attention already via the NFL, he brought the very real fact that it also happens in auto racing. He does a good job of talking about his symptoms and how he ignored them so he could keep on racing, and even after coming clean in 2012 and going through a few weeks of therapy that got him back into good shape, he ended up, starting in 2014, hiding new ones because he was doing the best he'd ever done in his career. Finally, in 2016, things got really bad.
None of that stuff is a spoiler for those who are interested in auto racing or CTE, although it was all new to me, but what he is doing with this book is trying to encourage others to seek help when they suffer from one or more of the six types of concussion. I, for one, had no idea there were six kinds--I've never had one. Nor did I know that it is not best treated by just lying in the dark until you feel better. Not being a sports aficionado, I haven't spent a lot of time reading up on this ( yes, of course, people can get concussions outside of sports and I have always known that), so I learned a few things.
