I read some really great fables to my son last year... One was about how Zebras got their stripes. Another one was about why hippos don't eat fish. A third was bout why monkeys don't get along with cheetahs. There were more. Please help. They are really great books and my son wants to read them to himself now. Perhaps the reading level is 1-3 grade. All the books were picture books (seperate books).

Michael Rosen had some books out like that, such as 
How Giraffe Got Such A Long Neck...and Why Rhino is So Grumpy and 
How the Animals Got Their Colors: Animal Myths from Around the World.
Thanks for helping. I solved it by going to the Children's Picture Book Database online. The authors are Hadithi, Mwenye & Kennaway, Adrienne. Titles are Lazy Lion, Hot Hippo, and there are more. These are great books!
