4 stars

This is a collection of stories written by Ted Chiang. The stories are mostly science fiction with a couple of fantasy leaning stories thrown in. The stories are all very creative. Some of them are heavy on science and I felt I was in over my head while others of the stories deal with mythology, religion and faith. I found that I preferred these stories because it was easier for me to follow the ideas. One of the stories in this collection was made into the movie Arrival, which I want to watch this week. I definitely recommend this collection to fans of science fiction.

Nikki | 663 comments I loved this & also though the movie was well done - I'd be interested to hear what you think of it.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11289 comments I really enjoyed this book. I love his writing. I read two of his short story books this year.

I sometimes get flashes of memories from the Sci-Fi books I read early this year, and they might all be from one of his books. Cora, was there a story in this book involving levels and levels of caves (or a building or dug out areas?) I'm reading The Book of Two Ways right now, and there are burial sites (Egyptian) one below another, and it feels very familiar.

Nicole - I'm not sure the endings of the story and the film are the same, but it's been so long since I saw the film, I can't be sure. I don't remember the film involving the linguist's family life as much as the book did. I'd like to see the film again, and maybe read the story again too.

Yes, it had a story about the Tower of Babylon and the miners had to climb up all of the levels of the tower to get to the top where they were going to dig a tunnel into heaven.

Thanks. I don't think I fully understood that story. Perhaps that's why it's still stuck in my head.
