Sophia tells her mother goodbye as she exits their small house, with her eight inch knife hidden under her baggy hunting shirt. She then heads to the woods to start training for the upcoming games.

message 3: by Hio (new)

Hio Botros sees Sophia heading to the woods from his very close by house, and grabs his training stuff. He heads after her.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia pauses when she hears footsteps behind her. She turns and locks eyes with Botros, his training equipment in hand. She gives him a friendly nod and says, "come on."

message 5: by Hio (last edited Nov 29, 2020 02:00PM) (new)

Hio Botros nods and catches up to her, until they're walking side by side. He fiddles with his shirt. Usually, when he's around others he's super carefree, but around Sophia, it's different. Even though they were practically like siblings, they'd known each other that long, he had a huge crush on her. He hid it well though.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia looks over at Botros and notices that he is playing with the hem of his shirt. She was beyond nervous about the games herself but wondered if voicing it out loud would make her friend anxious."What are you thinking about Botros?" she finally asks, as they make their way to the woods.

message 7: by Hio (new)

Hio "Oh, uh, you know, trying not to die. Just the usual." He smiled. As usual, he wasn't letting anyone know what he was really feeling. He shrugged. "Mostly just about training and preparing." They arrived at their regular training spot. "So whatt'd'ya wanna train in first?"

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia shrugged as she, pulled her knife from under her baggy shirt, placing it on the ground. "I figured we should work on our weakest skills. Like I suck at foraging and building fires. Maybe if you and I focus on things we're not good at we'll have a better shot at the games. Oh, and I need to show you how to throw knives," she answered.

message 9: by Hio (new)

Hio "Oh, okay. I should also... probably pratcice climbing," he said nervously. "But let's work on throwing knives first." he got a knife, and held it in his hand completely wrong.

message 10: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 29, 2020 03:11PM) (new)

Sophia chuckled softly at how Botros was holding his knife. "If you hold it like that you won't be able to stick it in the bark. Let me show you," she said walking over to him. She gently took the knife and wrapped Botros' fingers around the handle, so that they were about two inches from the blade. "There. That's how you hold a knife."

message 11: by Hio (new)

Hio Botros laughed. “Wow, I screwed up before I even threw the knife. That must mean I’m really bad.” When she touched his hand, he blushed, but quickly said, “okay let’s see how far off from the target I accidentally throw it,” he whipped it super fast, but the handle bounced off the target harmlessly, “oops,” he said and went to retrieve the knife

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia pursed her lips and watched as Botros hurled the knife at the tree. It bounced off immediately falling to the ground. "Hmm…not bad," she said, trying to be encouraging, "but try holding your arm back a bit farther next time though, so you get more speed. I should have told you that from the beginning."

message 13: by Hio (new)

Hio He smiled as he returned to his former position, holding the knife. He faced the tree, brought his arm back like she said, lined up his aim, and threw it really fast, the edge of the blade just stuck into the target.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia smiled brightly, as the tip of the knife pierced the tree bark. She clapped a little. "Nice job! I mean not as good as me," she said, teasing Botros a little, "but in twelve years you could be a real pro."

message 15: by Hio (new)

Hio “Not as good as you,” he said, also teasing, “you haven’t even thrown it yet! Here,” he handed the knife to her, “you throw.”

message 16: by Hio (new)

Hio When she clapped he bowed grandly, and said “thank you, thank you,” and retrieved the knife

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia accepted the knife from Botros then turned to face the tree. She stood back about five more feet than Botros had stood, then threw her arm back, sending the knife flying. It landed smack dab in the middle of the tree with an audible 'thunk." Sophia ran over to the tree and retrieved the knife immediately.

message 18: by Hio (new)

Hio “Show off,” he said, teasing her. “You just chose this skill to practice becaaise you excel at it”

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia laughed with a shrug. "Maybe, whatever. Okay, fine you choose what we do next, so it's fair."

message 20: by Hio (new)

Hio (Gtg bai) he laughed “I was only teasing. We can keep practicing this skill”

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

(Okay bye!))

message 22: by Hio (new)

Hio Botros says, "Maybe we should take a short break. I know we need all the practice we can get, seeing as the HG start tomorrow, or the chariots at least, but- I'm really nervous." He admits.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia bit her lip and sighed. "I'm actually petrified myself. I mean we're not killers. How are we supposed to go up against those other kids? I mean some of them have been training since they could walk!"

message 24: by Hio (new)

Hio Botros shrugged. "Well, like it or not, we're the tributes for our district. We can't reverse time and train more, and we can't NOT go to the arena, so there's really nothing to be done."

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia made a funny face and playfully rolled her eyes. "Thanks wise guy. I never would have guessed that!" she said, smiling nervously.

message 26: by Hio (new)

Hio He play-shoved her. "You are the one who asked, and I quote, "How are we supposed to go up against those other kids?" I was just answering your question." He smiled.

message 27: by Hio (new)

Hio (XD their interview and chariot outfits are HIDEOUS.)

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

((Ha! XD)) Sophia playfully shoved his shoulder and said, "yeah but that doesn't mean I have to like the answer."

message 29: by Hio (new)

Hio "Well, did you want me to lie? Did you want me to say, 'Oh, here's this magical time machine I have that will help us train more?'" He teased

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia shrugged and smiled. "Maybe. But I guess you're right. We've trained as much as we could. And hey you kinda know how to throw a knife now...that's something."

message 31: by Hio (new)

Hio "I guess," he said. "I wish we coulda trained more, though. But I suppose there is a bit of training before the HG. Even so, maybe you should be in charge of the knife-throwing."

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia nodded. "I'll be in charge of the knives and you'll be in charge of all the stuff I suck at."

message 33: by Hio (new)

Hio "You don't SUCK at anything. You're just... less skilled. So what is it you're not as good at?"

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia shrugged. "I suck at building fires and foraging. You know basic life skills?"

message 35: by Hio (new)

Hio "Oh, see, I'm actually good at those. What I suck at is, well, a lot of weapons, and, uh, anything that involves heights. And, uh," he blushed, "I'm deaf in one ear. But since my skills are your weaknesses, and vise versa, that's good. That means we have everything covered." He said.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia noticed Botros' blush. She knew he was a bit insecure about being deaf in one ear and his fear of heights. "You're right. I'll watch your back and you watch mine. One of us has to win this thing," she mumbled, not really wanting it to be her.

message 37: by Hio (new)

Hio "One of us? Why only one of us?" he asked. "And that's right. We'll watch each other's backs." (Wait how old is she, he's sixteen I think)

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

((I think she's sixteen.))
"It'd be a bit unrealistic to assume that we'd both win, don't you think?" she asked.

message 39: by Hio (new)

Hio (okay)
"It's unrealistic to assume one of us would win. But that doesn't stop me from hoping. Hoping, I mean, that we both win."

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia nodded a little. "I suppose if we're gonna let ourselves hope that one of us could win."

message 41: by Hio (new)

Hio "So, as long as we know there's a very strong possibility neither of us would win, if we let that ground us, I'm just going to keep hoping and dreaming of us winning."

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

"You're right. I'm just a pessimist I guess," Sophia sighed, picking up her knife.

message 43: by Hio (new)

Hio "That's not so much of a bad thing. If you always expect the best possible thing to happen, in other words, if you're an optimist, you're just setting yourself up for disappointment."

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia nodded and took a seat on the ground. She began to draw a picture in the dirt with the tip of her knife, just trying to take her mind off of the games.

message 45: by Hio (new)

Hio Botros sat near her, and started writing something in the dirt

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia looked up and leaned over to see what Botros was drawing. "What are you drawing?" she asked.

message 47: by Hio (new)

Hio “Writing, actually. And just, a small note. What are you drawing?”

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

"It's supposed to be a tree but it's not very good," Sophia mumbled, making another line for a branch.

message 49: by Hio (new)

Hio “I’m sure it’s fine,” he finished writing and stepped back to look at it

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

Sophia frowned, then stood up, wiping the dirt from her ripped jeans.
