As she grows older she falls in love with another girl, and when her "sin" is discovered attempts are made to "exorcise" her demons, and eventually she is cast out by her mother.

This is a strange little novel. The language in the beginning is bright and almost cheery as Jeanette grows up in her mother's strange world, but slowly realizes that she is different from others when she goes to school. Later when she leaves home struggles on her own the language sobers up, but it is at the end when the book started to get a bit boring for me. This is a great book for an English literature class, so full of metaphor and allegory it is ripe for discussion, but not really my cup of tea for pleasure reading.

This was turned into a BBC mini-series, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find it on my cable or streaming channels.
