Jennifer | 135 comments Since buddy reads are now a thing in the group, I thought I would make a dedicated thread for suggestions so please feel free to add your ideas here.

Cheapie reads:
The Falling Woman
Archaeologist can "see" the past. On sale this weekend for $1.99 through various e-tailers.

The Book of Koli
Post-apocalyptic story in a world where trees can be deadly. Since this is a series starter, I don't know if the $4.99 price is the regular price or if it's a limited time deal.

I was also going to suggest The Cloud Roads, which is on Hoopla and by book club fave Martha Wells, but I see that Sandi has already read it.

Carolyn F. You know I've wanted to read
Skyward. I saw there was a new book in the series out which looked good so I'd love to start this series. Overdrive says there are 4 copies (checked out right now) and there are the physical books. I don't see it on Hoopla.

I still have The Animators if we want to read that from our previous book club list. There's an audiobook and 2 ebooks on Overdrive. There are also some physical books. I don't see if on Hoopla.

I also have on my wish list Unchartered Territory by Connie Willis. This is available on Hoopla, there's one copy on Overdrive and it's part of anthology for a physical book. Terra Incognita: Three Novellas.

Or we can wait until the next free book on Tor. :)

I actually have not read any Sanderson before, but I have been wanting to. Since borrowable copies are scarce, I think I would bump up the number of chapters per discussion thread and/or put up discussion threads multiple times in a week since we'd only have three weeks with an Overdrive copy. I think SPL is still doing an extended due date for physical copies, but I don't know what the current length of the borrowing period is.

I didn't even think of that and it seems the books are pretty large.

Sandi | 51 comments Skyward is a great pick. Let’s do that one. I loved it and would like to read again. Suggest you divide the book up into about 3 parts. Then maybe Connie Willis after that.

message 6: by Sandi, Book Club Leader (new)

Sandi | 51 comments Just checked skyward. All ecopies checked out. Want to wait until they are available and read Connie Willis (Hoopla) Uncharted Territory first.

Wendy | 28 comments These both look / sound great!

Jennifer | 135 comments Since there seems to be a consensus, buddy read #2 will be Uncharted Territory and then Skyward.

Here's a tip if you add yourself to the Overdrive hold queue for Skyward but your hold comes in while we are still reading Uncharted Territory, you can have your hold delivered later based on the schedule you choose for it. https://help.overdrive.com/en-us/2265...

Carolyn F. Do you guys want to read The Cloud Roads next?

I would read it. The last time I checked, it's available through Hoopla.

Sorry I was kind of late with getting up the first discussion thread for Every Heart a Doorway. I had initially put off adding the threads for Skyward because no one else was reading it yet, but then it seemed everyone (except me) ripped through it once they had their copies.

Carolyn F. Oh great - I read this one already :)

Carolyn F. Do you want to read The Book of Koli next? I see the ebook and audiobook are on Overdrive.

I'm still up for it. I thought The Girl With All the Gifts was an interesting book, which made me intrigued by his new series.

message 14: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I'll request that from the library. I'm finishing up a book right now and then I'll read The Book of Koli next. :)

Carolyn F. Actually, I'm reading the synopses and I swear I've read this book before. I wonder if it started as a short story because it sounds so familiar and I kind of know what happens in the story. Very strange.

message 16: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Okay, I did a Google search. It is based on his 2013 Edgar Award-nominated short story Iphigenia In Aulis I did some more searching and it was in An Apple for the Creature. I read it in 2016, before I did more comprehensive reviews and would have noted what I felt about the short story. I know I liked it and it all came back when I read the synopses of the book. Looking forward to it.

Jennifer | 135 comments Thanks for the update as to when you'll be getting started on the book. I will postpone putting up the first discussion thread for at least a week.

While I have read a lot of the Harris/Kelner anthologies, it ends up that is one I haven't gotten to yet. Even if I was familiar with the original story, things can evolve so much when it comes to the novel version. Were you in Sci Fi Book Club when we read Love Minus Eighty? A while later, I came across the short story, and it ends up that the author went on to write two different novels from that story. (The second novel was Hitchers,)

message 18: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. No I didn't read that one with the group. But there's another story that was part of an anthology that the author made a full length novel and changed a bunch of stuff that I had liked in the short story. I should be done with this book by this week.

Carolyn F. What do you think about reading Fugitive Telemetry as one of our buddy reads? I'm so excited it's coming out.

Any other suggestions?

message 20: by Sandi, Book Club Leader (new)

Sandi | 51 comments Fugitive telemetry. Can’t wait.

I actually still need to read Exit Strategy, but it can still be a buddy read if others are interested. It will be officially released next week.

Jennifer | 135 comments Feel free to toss out any other suggestions you might have for buddy reads. I will probably eventually add some more of my own, but it will probably be a little while as I am prepping for some travel right now, combined with other stressors in my household at the moment. : /

Carolyn F. Well, good thoughts to you Jennifer.
