This was a great diversion which at the time I never picked up would be an important twist in the plot. I completely took it on face value. It seemed perfectly believable that a younger, inexperienced Constable would be so sickened that he would lose his cool even briefly.
The only thing I picked up on was Whiley’s weird behavior. He wasn’t saying anything and as the seasoned, experienced officer, I expected him to take the lead. But, I got sidetracked by that idea he was protecting his pension. It seemed awfully dumb but I bought that Jenks lost control.
What a fantastic twist!

It is a great twist. I did think that something was off with Whiley. I considered that Whiley was involved in the beating too then talked Jenks into taking all the blame. It seemed reasonable when we find out the Whiley is near retirement. I can see a young cop trying to protect his partner.
Didn’t you love Jenks’s outrage when he discovered he’d been played? This man put his family at risk to help out this man.

That was a twist that I never saw coming. I totally bought into Jenks losing it and beating the prisoner.
