Alex tapped into Kim's belief that she could have done something to help her brother. She also knows that Kim doesn't want to look at anything good about her mother that would help Kim forgive her. The way Alex used "Kimmy" to bring her mother into the conversation pulled all her negative memories to the surface.
Calling her Kimmy completely upended her for the moment. I think that’s when Kim realized she was in danger. She tried to get her old child therapist, Ted, to give her a blueprint to deal with her but I really think she was looking to get protection for herself. I was worried for her.
How Alex was able to push Kim's buttons was a warning to her. She really is teetering on the edge with her unresolved issues with her mother and she needs some sort of closure to learn to live with it. The only good thing about this altercation is perhaps it will make Kim realize that she needs to address what is lurking under the surface. I hope she reaches out to Ted for counsel.
Kim talks about the boxes that she has locked up in her brain, and it is clear by her thoughts and Ted's that if she opens up those boxes, she won't remain the same person, but we already see her changing - the dog and considering David as more than an assignment. The questions is, how much more will she change.
