Pick-a-Shelf discussion

A. Introduction

Bookopoly is a boardgame for bookworms based on the classic Monopoly. For our purposes, we will only keep the essence of the boardgame which is to roll 2 dice to move along the board and follow the instruction for reading. There will be no cash exchanges etc.

We are changing it up this year by being task oriented. Please read these new instructions carefully.

Everybody is a winner in this challenge! There is no finishing line as such nor do you have to collect cash/points but we all get to tackle our TBR.

Before we begin, however, you MUST have a dedicated Shelf for this challenge. This Shelf is where participants will pick books for you to read during the challenge.

Please keep this Shelf up to date throughout the challenge. By all means, put all of your books-to-read-for-other-challenges here! But also remember to remove those you've read or do not wish to read any longer. I would also suggest to include, for at least half of your Shelf, easily accessible books, for reasons which will be clear later on.

To sign up for this challenge, please provide a link to your Bookopoly Shelf in this thread: Sign Ups [LINK TBA]. Please also note which Board is your chosen Main Board.

You may compile your shelf now but Official Start date of this challenge is December 1, 2020. Challenge will run up to November 30, 2021 [extended to] December 31, 2021.

B. The Travel

4 Boards:
1. Classic Bookopoly
2. The World
3. Award Winning
4. The Name of the Wind

Each participant will choose a Main Board. Participants then will go around their Main Board throughout the length of the challenge and only ‘travel’ to other boards when they:
1. Land on GO square; OR
2. Are instructed to go to GO square (Chance/Community Chest tasks)

Participant then will pick another board to travel to and go around that board ONCE until they either rolled to land on OR past the GO square. Then, they will return to their Main Board (and start again from GO square).

*** Please review each board prior to choosing your Main Board as there is quite a difference between each due to our new task oriented challenge this year ***

C. Around the Board

1. "S" (Shelves): Follow the the relevant Board's instructions and read any book found on that shelf.

2. "C" (Chance / Community Chest): Follow the the relevant Board's instructions & if required, read a book as required by task

3. "U" (Utilities): Ask a fellow participant to pick books from your Bookopoly shelf in the book request thread. There is only one (1) request thread this year.

4. a. JAIL:
i. if you are on your Main Board:Read the Biggest Thickest Meanest book on your Bookopoly Shelf at time of being sent to jail
ii. if you are on your 'travel': Return to your Main Board
b. JUST VISITING: Read a book with word in title that is, at least, 3 syllables long. Please choose your book from your Bookopoly Shelf if you can. If not, then from your general tbr.

5. FREE PARKING: Read a "Random" book from your Bookopoly Shelf. When viewing your Bookopoly Shelf, scroll down to the bottom and choose to view your shelf as 'Random'. When screen is refreshed, read one of the first top three books.

6. PROPERTY: Please refer to each Board's thread for task instruction/s.

7. GO:
i. on your Main Board: Travel to another Board – you may choose which board to travel to however please pick different ones each time you travel.
ii. on any other Board: Go back to your Main Board

D. Moving Along the Board

1. Roll 2 dice and move along the board as per number rolled

2. Follow instruction as per the square you’ve landed on –refer (C) above

3. If you are required to request books to be picked for you;
a. You may nominate a number of books that they pick for you (only to give you a little bit of leeway in choosing which book to read or is better accessible)
b. You only have to read ONE (1) book

4. The recommended time to finish reading your picked books is 4 weeks. However, this is only to help you move along the Board and keeping your movement thread active.

5. You may be on 3 squares (max) at any moment of the challenge. You may read the books in whichever order is convenient.
This is purely to save confusion later on: please datestamp all your movements.

F. FAQ

Q: What if I want to join in mid-year?
A: You are welcome to join in anytime

Q: What if I want to stop playing?
A: We would appreciate it if you would let us (moderators) know your intention to stop playing rather than just dropping off without a word and please let us know whether you’re just taking a short break or if we should archive your movement thread.

Q: What if I'm not sure if I can commit for the long run?
A: Feel free to join in anyway but please let us know if you wish to stop playing

Q: Exactly how many books do I have to read for each square?
A: You only have to read one (1) book per square. You can ask for 3-5 books to be picked for you to give you an option but you only have to read 1. You can read all of them, if you like.

Q: How long do we have to read our book?
A: Generally, you have 4 weeks to read a book BUT we’ve only put this timeframe on so you could keep going along the Board. There are no penalties if you are late.

Q: Is there a limit to size of book?
A: None whatsoever

Q: How would you know if it's the "Biggest Thickest Meanest" book on my shelf?
A: We don't! As always, we rely on honor system in our challenges. Your conscience will direct you better than we can ;)

Q: Can I add / remove books at any time?
A: Please only undertake "maintenance" when you are in-between rolls (ie. you have received all your picks and are in your 'reading time' before having to roll again for your next move).

Q: How many books do I have to have on my Bookopoly Shelf?
A: We suggest within the range of 30-90 books. At least 30 books so that there is more than enough choices for the pickers and about 90 books maximum so it doesn't become too unwieldy when browsing.

Q: Can I plan ahead?
A: Refer to D. 5. above

Q: What do you mean by "datestamp"?
A: To note the date:
*at each roll of die; and
*when you determine the book you will read; and
*when you've finished reading your book.

Q: What if I can't finish the book I'm reading for the square?
A: You are required to read at least 1 book per square so read another book that has been picked for you. Or, if you're on a task-related square, pick another book that fits the task.

Q: What if I can't finish any of the books picked for me?
A: Essentially you owe some 'rent' so you'll need to finish reading a book picked by that participant so go ahead and request one additional book.

If you cannot finish that additional book, then you go to debtor's jail (not the square) and must read the largest book on your Bookopoly Shelf to get out.

After completing that book, play resumes from last rolled square.

A new version already..yay! Where did the time go? I like how this version is more task orientated. It sounds great. I yet have to read 2 books for the last version of bookopoly. I better hurry!

For the jail task I'd like to be able to choose among the 3 biggest books that are on my list. Is that allowed?

From the past, I think we were pretty lenient as long as there isn't a huge page number difference between the 3. That is, there isn't a 200 page difference between the thickest book and the 3rd thickest or anything significant.

This looks good! Looking at the board options, but already leaning toward Classic. Many there that I have never read.

If I go with Classic and am the only one on that board, how are book requests filled? Can anyone fill a request on any board or must you only fill requests of the board you choose as your main board?

Beth, there is just 1 request thread which is for everyone no matter what mainboard you have

Sorry if it's not too clear in the instruction but it is actually separated to a. Jail and b. Just Visiting -see below, I've put in spaces so you can see the difference :)

on another note, I walked past a bookshop today and they were selling a sailor moon monopoly for $49.99 and I was sorely tempted :D

Another question - are re-reads allowed? There are a few series I want to finish where I want to re-read from the beginning - Kate Daniels is one of them. Could I put books I'm planning to re-read on my Bookopoly shelf?

Some of these series are 5+ books and it will be great if I can start them at the beginning of the year and maybe catch up by year end.

I see where some have done their first roll to get ready. Where are you finding the Roll 2 dice link? There is not one at the top of the Classic board.

Ah, the isn't a link at the top of any Boards' but it's a good idea & I'll add that.

Question: in "The name of the wind" board, a lot of properties have names like "The University – The Mews", "The University – The Archives" etc.
Can I use all the name (before and after dash) for the letters in the property squares or only the non-repeating part after the dash...?

And also: as "First letter/s of word/s in title" do I have to count also prepositions and articles?

Yes all the name of property can be used, before & after dash.

And yes, counting prepositions etc.

I assume that for either initials or first letter of title words, if a letter (or initial) is repeated, there would have to be the same number of letters in the place name? So,

author = Camilla Chafer, 2 Cs would need to be in the place name

and

title = Hard to Hold, 2 Hs would need to be in the place name?

also, having to include prepositions and articles is just mean ;-)~

I am on the Classic Board and just landed on Go Watch TV. Do I now roll again? Also, I just noticed that there is no JAIL square on this board. Am I missing something?

Watching TV is your JAIL for the Classic Board, Beth. I'll fix the instruction so the JAIL reflects 'Watching TV' & your instruction for this square is:

When you land on the first one, you're "Just Visiting" (Explore your mind). When you land on the second one (or sent to jail from one of the chance/community chest cards), you are to go to that first square to "Watch TV".

As you landed on the second one, you've been sent to jail (ie. to "Watch TV") so when you next make your move/roll, you'll have to count from that first square.

This may be a dumb question (the rules do say to use all initials) but I just want to check. If I landed on a location and wanted to use a book by R.L. Stine, would I need to count the "L" in his name or just R. and S.?

The initials question only applies to the Name of the Wind Board, correct? Otherwise, I really missed something on the Awards Board.

Question for the Awards board. I landed on Agatha Award and went through all of the pages looking for something on my TBR shelf, but found nothing. I did find #5 and 6 in a series I'm reading, but I'm only on book 2. Can I read that book by the same author even though it wasn't nominated for the award or should I just do a book request?
