Captain Wyndham is still struggling with his addiction, and one night a raid on the opium den he is in causes him to flee in panic. In his flight, he stumbles upon the body of a Chinese man with eyes gouged out and stabbed with a curved knife. Days later, a second body is found with the same kind of trauma, and the case is assigned to Wyndham and Bannerjee.

I really like how the author set this story around real historical events and people - the peaceful protests, the local leaders who were followers of Gandhi, the secret military research, and the visit of Prince Edward. Mukherjee weaves an excellent mystery with the history and builds up the tension to an exciting conclusion.
