Series opens as Jason Redmond and his ward, Micah, arrive from America in an English village shortly after the end of the U. S. Civil War. Redmond was a surgeon with the Union Army, who was captured by Confederates spending the rest of the war in a prisoner-of-war camp, along with Micah and his father (who died in captivity); Micah had been the drummer in his father's regiment. Redmond is actually a member of British nobility, his father having bitterly quarreled with the grandfather and left for America to start a new family there.
Daniel Haze, local constable, is called in to investigate the details of a corpse found in the local church crypt. Given his medical background, Redmond volunteers to serve as the medical examiner on this case, forming a friendship with Haze as they solve their first murder. There are subplots involving Haze's unresolved past as well as Redmond's new love interest. Redmond's upper-class background gives him access to characters and situations unavailable to Haze.
Wasn't sure about this series at first, but as it was a free Kindle book thought I would try it. Now, I'm completely hooked!
