Kristie | 19336 comments I just want to confirm that we are using the same series rule as we did in previous challenges. A book that is in a series with 5 primary works means currently published, correct? So, if I read a book that has 5 books published in January, but later in the month or year book #6 comes out, it is fine as long as the book is read and reported before book #6 is published.

Yes, that is correct. Once you've finished reading the book and reported it, published books after that date won't have any effect. The problem comes in if you haven't read the book, because suddenly the series is no longer 5 primary works.

message 4: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19336 comments Thank you. I thought that would be the case, but just wanted to make sure. I have a couple of books that fit and only one has a new release coming out early in the year, so if I don 't get to it I have a backup plan. :)

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments Janice, for collection, horse on cover, are the horses on these covers sufficient focus?

Perestroika in Paris by Jane Smiley
Fallen Land by Taylor Brown

Yes, both are acceptable.

No, sorry. Technically, they are pegasi, mythical creatures. So, not a horse.

Okay. Thanks. Maybe I can place it somewhere else.

message 11: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60100 comments Mythology is listed as a main page genre. Museum 27, about, has that task. Maybe you can use it for that task.

Thank you.

The Titan's Curse (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #3) by Rick Riordan is also the 3rd of 5 in a series, so it will work for this museum, the About task.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1796 comments For Task #2, I have a set of books called the Manawaka Sequence. They are not a series per say but a collection of books that go together.
Here: https://www.goodreads.com/series/6743...

Would this meet the requirements of the task or should I look for an actual series??

Goodreads has them listed as a series, so go ahead.

Katrisa | 4503 comments I was planning on using Mostly Harmless for this as being part of a 5 book series. But I just noticed that GR has it listed as 6 books - but the 6th book is not written by Douglas Adams. Can I still use it? The 6th book was written after Adams was dead. So Adams wrote a 5 book series and someone else added a book later.

No, sorry. Other series have had other writers take over after the original author died. Leephorn & Chee series was taken over by Tony Hillerman's daughter after he died. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is also continuing after the author's death. I can think of a few others.

Viji | 1519 comments I have Too Quiet In Brooklyn by Susan Russo Anderson and wanted to read this for the 5 primary works task as I found that the series Fina Fitzgibbons has five primary works as per GR Link:
https://www.goodreads.com/series/1467...

I found another book by the same author - (The Girl with the Golden Earrings: A Fina Fitzgibbons Brooklyn Mystery - for one of the interactive tasks. This has also been listed as Fina Fitzgibbons series but does not find a place in the GR link mentioned above. This also fits the - set in New York - task.

How do I take this series as one with 5 primary works or one with more than 5 primary works? Pl. help me.

Thanks.

Go with the series page which shows 5 primary books. Do you plan on reading it soon? I would recommend you do so before a librarian looks into the situation and changes it. :)

I wondered if a librarian noticed the error we were discussing earlier and fixed it before you finished the book. But I see you can use it for the 7 book series task, so move it there.

Thanks, Janice. I had another book in mind for the 7 book series task. As this book involves the abduction of a four-year old child which is the main knot in the storyline, I am wondering if I could use this for the task - main page genre of Mystery that involves kidnapping (Museum 30).

message 25: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60100 comments I don't think you need a ruling on that option, Viji. If it's a mystery (mystery on mbp) and involves an abduction, it fits the criteria of the task with no ambiguity.

Gunit Kaur Kalada | 407 comments Looking for a ruling for the interactive task-

Although, the earliest works acquired by the National Gallery of Canada were from Canadian artists, with Canadian art remaining the focus for the institution, its collection also includes a number of works from artists around the world. One such artist is Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, who was a prominent French portrait painter from the 18th century, whose paintings were featured in an exhibition at the museum.
https://www.gallery.ca/whats-on/exhib...

So for this task, I have decided to go for a book set in France.

Would The Postilion (The Masqueraders, #2) by Minerva Spencer be acceptable for this task? Only the horse's face is featured prominently.

All the rules require is that it be reported on the series page as "5 primary works".

uncomfytomato | 265 comments The Riyria Chronicles is a 5 primary work series but the 5th one wasn't published yet, It doesn't apply to the task right?

message 43: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Bash, you can only count books that are actually published.

I had it the other way around last year for a similar task. I waited too long to read it, and by the time I wanted to start it, another book in the series had been published so it didn't fit the criteria anymore.

message 44: by Annerlee (last edited Aug 11, 2021 10:53AM) (new)

Annerlee | 2873 comments For series of 5 primary works:
I'm planning on reading the most recent in the Jackson Brodie Series:
Big Sky (Jackson Brodie, #5) by Kate Atkinson
series page: https://www.goodreads.com/series/5359...

or the latest in the Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith
Troubled Blood (Cormoran Strike, #5) by Robert Galbraith
series page: https://www.goodreads.com/series/1080...

I've requested both books from the library, so it depends on which is available first.

message 45: by Annerlee (last edited Aug 11, 2021 10:58AM) (new)

Annerlee | 2873 comments I've been digging about in my boxes of paperbacks for examples of horse on the cover and have found the following:
The Pale Horseman (The Saxon Stories, #2) by Bernard Cornwell Figure of Hate (Crowner John Mystery #9) by Bernard Knight
There is nothing BUT horses on both covers, so I'm thinking either would be suitable. Either Bernard will do (lol)

That would finish up Museum 7 for me : D

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Annerlee - the Virgil Cole & Everett Hitch series books by Robert B. Parker have horses on the covers. I was going to read the forth in the series Blue-Eyed Devil, for an Interactive task with horse(s) on the cover, but I bumped it for another book and changed the task. I love the Robert B. Parker series, and Virgil and Everett are great characters.

message 48: by Annerlee (last edited Aug 14, 2021 02:32PM) (new)

Annerlee | 2873 comments Cool, thank you Cherie.

I don't often read westerns, mainly because I wouldn't know which are the best ones. I did read True Grit recently, on the strength of your review, and also enjoyed The Sisters Brothers when we read it as a group. Was that last year? So I may well give the Robert B. Parker series a try too. What's a good place to start - can I start half way through if the first book doesn't have a horse on the cover? lol

(So many books to read!)

message 49: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Annerlee - Virgil and Hitch are “best” read from the beginning. They are almost a continuation of each story, at least the first three build from the previous one. I think it would be okay to read the Blue-Eyed Devil as a stand alone though, if it were just for the horse on the cover. Parker only wrote the first four books. (Someone else took over the series after he passed away. ). I read all of his series. He was a terrific writer.

The Brothers Sisters group read was way longer than last year! LOL!

message 50: by Annerlee (last edited Sep 07, 2021 01:23PM) (new)

Annerlee | 2873 comments My sense of time has slipped with all this stayying at home business... hmmph

Going with Cherie's advice and starting with book 1 of the series... if the horses are prominent enough on this cover...

Appaloosa by Robert B. Parker

(Actually, I'm going to read it either way lol)
